it is, as many people say, a total shithole, surrounded on all sides by a polluted and poisoned industrial wasteland, and although the eating is good and the selection of western foods in the supermarkets is to be commended the town itself is just an ugly mess.
we had an excellent stay in the dusit hotel, an oasis of calm at the end of the beach road and the baht buses were super convenient. but the town and its offerings are nasty and tawdry.
the awful russian presence, to say nothing of the sleazy nature of beach road and walking street mean that the resort is, and probably always will be, a haven for lowrent foreigners and the lowrent thais that serve their needs, and gathering place of the ill mannered, the ignorant, the low and the shameless. a grotesque hogarthian caricature showing the depths to which humanity can sink if left to their own devices.
jomtien was little better, a traffic choked strip of low rent businesses, tightly packed condos and punters who may self delude that they are living it large in monte carlo or the riviera, but in fact seem to be stuck in clacton or marbella on a hot day.
awful place. worth a couple of days though just to reassure oneself and count ones blessing that one doesn't live there.
