Just out of interest Terry, I know you've lived in Thailand briefly but what was bringing you here as a tourist in the first place?. The temples and photography opportunities?. For me it was the whores, I have ZERO problems in admitting this. But I still live in Pattaya even though, like many, I could live anywhere in the world I want from Monaco to Melbourne. The reasons I (and countless others) prefer to stay living in Pattaya and rarely go near the bars these days is a whole topic on its own.

Temples are OK and photography is my game. Actually first experiences with the Temples are stunning, especially the Palace in Bangkok.

Best golf destination in Thailand by far, and it won an award for best golf destination in Australasia a few years back. Absolutely beautiful out on these courses, all of which are a 30-50 min drive from town. Home by midday after 18 holes, a feed, and a few beers is easy. With not 1 whore having been spotted which suits the fuddy duddies.

Pattaya does actually serve a purpose to the Thai nationals as well. Having lived in the northern part of Thailand, I have seen numerous Thai women and men head to Pattaya for work when it could not be found locally. The mystique of Pattaya is strong and using it as a safety net to make enough money to support a family back home has made Pattaya somewhat of a fabled town where fortunes could be made and future foreign spouses abound.

When a Thai lady is down on her luck or has been jilted by a farang boyfriend, she will often head back to Pattaya to find another sucker, er I mean boyfriend. My sister-in-law is one of these unfortunate ladies. She has had a few other foreign boyfriends and the last was a German road worker who tried to support her while he labored in Germany and Switzerland. When he lost his job, the money stopped and she was left with little choice than to go back to work in Pattaya. This story is played out endlessly all over Thailand.

I am not a fan of Pattaya, but it does serve a purpose for the Thais as well as all the tourists that flock there every year.

Pattaya is a great place to retire. I have a buddy, a retired consultant US surgeon who is coming over shortly on his fourth trip. His condo is ready. He doesn't do hooers; never has. But he has no problems hanging about with his buddies that do. He reckons between golf games, fishing trips and massages (not the happy ending sort), he will lend his medical expertise to some of the local charities and he has been working towards this. He has an open mind and good heart. Despite being a Democrat, he's got Pattaya sussed for what HE wants to take from it and what HE wants to give to it and doesn't really give a shit about what other people think.
