Defra approved vet in Pattaya

HI all - I am sending a dog to the UK soon, and need to find an approved Vet here in Pattaya. I've lived here long enough to know that every vet here will say they are approved to get the money, but I actually would prefer to know from someone first hand which places are kosha.

I live on SCC in the dark side and the dog is a pedigree. Rabies shot is over a year old though so I am not sure if he will need another one (I expect so) so do need the vets advice.

I know this is a pets section post, but it is specific to Pattaya so didn't know where best to post it.

And why they would be approving a Thai vet.
Or are you looking for an overseas trained/schooled vet?

Well, when you get all your jabs and blood tests done, the UK will only accept these documents from a kosha vet as opposed to any old tom dick or Somchai. In a place a corrupt as Thailand, I should imagine that this is especially true.

So has any member sent a dog from Pattaya to the UK and if so, which vet did they use?

Gilbert , my friend sent his 2 dogs to the u.k. 5mths ago, quite easy but had to have there blood / etc checked in O.Z, as Somchi etc cant be trusted for this , please contact me & i will pass on my friends e-mail address for you , so you have the information directly from someone who has just done this .

Not Pattaya, but I believe animals entering Thailand and needing quarantine go to Animal Farm Vet Hospital, Soi On Nuch in Bangkok.

So if it is some form of recognized certification you require it might be worth a call.

Chula university also has a Veterinarian Clinic, as does Madihol.

Hi Gilbert, you can't get the blood tested in Thailand. There are no certified labs in Thailand, it has to be sent to UK, Australia, Europe etc.
However, if you're sending the dog to UK it doesn't need the blood test (or even a rabies injection, weirdly, though it does need a combined vaccine) because it will be quarantined anyway. I sent a dog to UK once, and just used my local vet in Hua Hin, I didn't go to a specialist vet, although one linked to a hospital or university may be more reputable as suggested by Vocal Neal. I have sent dogs to most parts of Europe, the UK and USA in the past, so if you need any help, PM me and I'll see what I can remember

It's the British dept which deals with animals, farming and agriculture. It's actually the quarantine kennels in UK that needs to be DEFRA approved and the travel arrangements, rather than the Thai vet, but the vaccine certificate would need to have approved and recognised vaccines on it and a vet licensing number.

Travelling into the EU from an unlisted country
An ‘unlisted’ country is any country not included in the list of EU and non-EU countries.

Unfortunately Thailand is not a "listed" country. So....

When travelling to or returning to the UK from an unlisted country, your pet needs:

a microchip
a rabies vaccination (make sure your pet is microchipped first or the vaccination won’t count)
a blood test - the vet must take the blood sample at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination (the date of vaccination counts as day 0, not day 1)
an official third country veterinary certificate
tapeworm treatment (for dogs only)
You must also use an authorised carrier and an approved route.

Since there is some doubt about whether some of these steps are possible in Thailand...

When you return to the UK
Staff from the travel company will scan your pet’s microchip and check your documents.

If you don’t have the correct documents or your pet hasn’t been properly prepared it will be put into quarantine or sent back to the country it travelled from. You must pay the costs for this.

I would be very interested to find out the process and get a rough idea of costs. We may have to relocate our dog back to the UK with us, and would like to know what we and our dog may have to face.

When the dogs are in quarantine, can you visit them regularly? Are the conditions good?
Would it be more humane to find them a new owner to forgo the stress of being quarantined?

If the steps required are possible in Thailand i would like to know where also. I would hate to send our dog to pooch prison (if it is like that) for 3 months.

When I did it, the cost was £10 per dog, per day. That doesn't include flights. And it's for 6 months, or certainly was then. So you're talking at least £2000.

When the dogs are in quarantine, can you visit them regularly?

Yes. Most allow you to visit whenever you want.

Are the conditions good?

About the same as a boarding kennel. I'd recommend going to visit the kennel or getting friends or family to.

Would it be more humane to find them a new owner to forgo the stress of being quarantined?

That's a choice only you can make. I researched back then that 1 in 4 pets died in quarantine, never through rabies, though. Hopefully, that's changed for the better. But you would have to be sure that your dogs would be happy and well looked after if you left them.
There is no way around quarantine in the UK unless you have a friend in Europe who will take your dogs for 6 months. If you send them to Europe, they live there for 6 months and get their pet passport and can come across then with no quarantine. I've also done it that way with my Mum's German Shepherd.

The one thing that Thailand is good at w/regard to Vets is cost. Maybe charge more in Farangville but out in the sticks, a trip to the Vet is mai paeng maak!

This sounds great Manpet. Just so i understand, your friend sent the dogs to Australia before sending them to the UK? Did the dogs fly from Aus to UK or did they come back to Thailand before they went?

If you wouldn't mind asking your friend and posting the results it would be appreciated.

The dogs went direct from Thailand to the U.K. , there paperwork needed was confirmed in O.Z blood tests etc , i will ask my pal to join teakdoor & explain 1st hand o.k.

Im in the same situation wanting to take two dogs back to the uk.Also 2 birds think you will find that the vet on sukhumvit just before tesco lotus south pattaya advertise p.e.t.s. scheme i have no idea of costs involved yet though.
the other thing regarding entry into the uk the law has now been relaxed since 1st jan 2012 as long as pets are chipped have all up to date paperwork ie pets certificate health cert fvaccination certificate etc they can be taken from the airport with you after they have been checked by airport vet.
please share any information you get on this site and i will do likewise.

Pattaya Animal Hospital is OK actually. I used an agent in the end; more expensive but a lot easier.
