Going to Pattaya - getting scared

I am doing several weeks in SEA soon (not Thailand) but thought I might give Thailand another try towards the end of the trip so have a week in Pattaya closer to Jomtien as a luxury (in comparison) wind down before heading back to Australia.
Looking at street view on google maps has me feeling a bit scared as almost everywhere I look there are shit roads, soi dogs and piles of rubbish lying around not to mention fucking touts selling shit everywhere.
I feel this will have me stressed to breaking point before heading home unless I just lock myself behind the walls of my pool villa and get pissed every day.
    What have I done?

Don't forget your eyes will feel like their on fire from the high ash diesel pollution in the air. If you get really shit faced in a main street bar you can pass out and wake up to have a black looking mascara ring around your eyes.

But, in essence, you have just described Thailand.

Suggest you re-book a week in Koh Samed/Chang/Krabi if you want a lazy, hassle free bit of relaxation.

Or, you could pop down to God's waiting room and bumble around Hua Hin.

Looked at all of those places but reality was that I wanted an easy spot to get to and something to do at the other end.
They all looked not as easy to get to (bus/ferry/etc) with excess baggage and the accommodation in my price range looked a bit ordinary compared to what I am getting in Pattaya.

Or, you could pop down to God's waiting room and bumble around Hua Hin.
That was my first choice but it had that death warmed up feel about it.
The boss wanted something with a bit more life to it - Pattaya has probably gone to far the other way which is why I thought Jomtien might be the compromise but looking at streetview it still looks out of control to my way of thinking.

Stay in your luxury place in Jontiem and don't venture out. Simple. I'm sure they will bring hookers there for you with the need to mix with the hoi polloi.

No need for hookers or hoi poloi but no need for piles of rubbish and touts either.
Its not the first time I have been to SEA and I go to Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore regularly with no weird feelings or shock but for some reason the image I get of Thailand sends shivers down my spine and I am not sure why.
And yes, all the places I mentioned do have touts and rubbish, but from what I see on streetview Pattaya seems to be a new high, way higher than I imagined.

Pattaya isn't that bad at all. Stay at the Dusit for the grounds, or the Marriott, and poodle about. The Hilton has a great bar terrace and there are several decent watering holes about. Even Soi 7/8 is ok if you're in the mood. The Amari overlooks a quieter part of the bay and rubbish etc is mercifully absent. Bangkok has infinitely more soi dogs everywhere than Pattaya.

Jomtien is a truly third world shithole but Dongtan beach is quiet, well kept and sufficiently large to avoid most throngs.

Does it occur to you that the pictures, taken a year ago, were on bin day?

Go to Manila for a couple of days first, and then have another look at Pattaya. It certainly is not Kansas, Dorothy, but it is not the slum you are making it out to be,.

almost everywhere I look there are shit roads, soi dogs and piles of rubbish lying around
This just about describes everywhere in Asia, including parts of Singapore (oh Ok then the roads are OK).
There are less touts in Pattaya than Bangkok?
If you are comparing it would help to know where else you intend to visit and the purpose of you thinking about Pattaya Golf?

I suggest you don't go as you have a negative opinion/ glass half empty already

If you want relaxing beach life reading a book then go to Koh Tao. If you just want to relax without the beach go to Lake Toba.

As for your statement. Have you been to India? You might be stressed to beyond breaking point, there.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

Is this sort of scenery what you call bin day?

And if I go to other places first and then look at Pattaya, Pattaya looks bad and damn near a slum which is my point.

I don't understand. You say you *might* give Thailand a another try. Which means you are not booked yet.

So don't come. Go to Langkawi instead.

We will clearly miss your classy presence, but somehow we will struggle on.

So why is the OP posting on a thai board if he has no interest in Thailand? What is the point?

Seems a bit odd, posting a thread saying "you all live in shit" to a selection of people who have chosen to live there. Like walking into a bar fists flying lol

This just about describes everywhere in Asia, including parts of Singapore (oh Ok then the roads are OK).
    I disagree
I went to Patong many years ago and was scared away for similar reasons that I have been looking at Pattaya - endless lines of same shit shops and touts trying to sell same shit.
I stayed further away in Rawai and Karon and enjoyed it a lot more, but there was still that underlying feeling of what I am not sure, but it never felt right.
I never get this feeling in other asian countries which I go to every year.

If you are comparing it would help to know where else you intend to visit and the purpose of you thinking about Pattaya
I will have been to Saigon, Danang, Hoi An, Nha Trang before doing Chiang mi and Pattaya.
No whoring shopping, clubbing or golf , just get up, have leasurely breakfast a bike ride, a few beers and read a book, get a massage and a few more drinks, watch the world go by and contemplate my navel.
The above areas have a vibrancy - pride - friendliness that I never seemed to feel in Phuket but I was hoping this time to get it in Chiang Mai and on the outer of Pattaya
I suggest you don't go as you have a negative opinion/ glass half empty already
    About what exactly?
I dont have a glass half full opinion about other areas but why do I seem to have one about pattaya?
Is it the visual piles of rubbish and endless rows of shops selling the same shit?
    Could I have a point?

If you want relaxing beach life reading a book then go to Koh Tao. If you just want to relax without the beach go to Lake Toba.
I am not going for relaxing beach life, pattaya does not have what I class as a beach worthy of mentioning.
As for your statement. Have you been to India? You might be stressed to beyond breaking point, there.
Why would I go to India?
    Self torture?

I do have an interest in Thailand

I am hoping that some would convince me that what I see walking the streets on streetview is not how it is.
I am hoping that those that live there may at least make an attempt at pointing to a better side instead of just saying "fuck off somewhere else"

Back in my initial thought process I thought I might give Thailand another go, so I booked a week in Chiang Mai, a week in Pattaya and a few days in Bangkok at the end of this trip.

if you can put up with the dogs, step over piles of rubbish, walk in the street because of food sellers, break an ankle in a pavement pothole, jomtien has this and more, (a bit tongue in cheek)

all this i could put up with,

but the russians, they have there verry own brand of arrogant nasty,
i never want to spend time in a hotel infested with these slobs again.

Pattaya is a shit hole. There is no getting away from it. Does not mean it is not an interesting shit hole, but if you don't like shit holes, stay away.

You can, as you say, hole up in any of the several very nice hotels as has been stated -but in my personal opinion, you could be anywhere for that - why drag down to pattaya.

No amount of spin is going to make pattaya into any thing other than a shit hole. Now I used to go there fairly often as it is the nearest dive location to bangkok - and I do have a fondness for pattaya as a classic example of a shit hole.

Yes well that end of town does seem more what I was hoping for but I wanted it without the price that the Marriot etc attracts

I actually thought the Princess of Thailand had a home in Jomtien and it was supposed to be quite high end.
I have since had a bit more of a "walk" around the area and the main streets seem relatively pleasant and more what I was thinking the area would or should be like.

Because I couldnt find a private pool villa close to restaurants, ocean and easy transport from BKK anywhere for around $60-$70 a night, even in Vietnam.
    But I could at Pattaya.

This is in the same complex I have booked

You seem to have confused yourself.

HRH has her residence in Pratumnak Hill area which is the development between Pattaya Tai and Jomtien. This is considered to be a more exclusive area together with Wongamat, near Naklua.

Both areas are seeing great development.

Given what you seem to be looking for I rather think Cabbages & Condoms Resort aka The Birds & Bees in Pratumnak Soi 4 would have been perfect. On its own private beach area, secluded jungle style grounds and only 10 mins away from bedlam.

And the place above in the picture shares a wall with B&B.C&C, so by the sounds of it we have done OK.
