    Question Tuktuks (For Private Use)

How come there isnt many of these about the place?
The only ones i see are the one or 2 used for ferrying people to and from the pier to go on those floating restos out in the bay, and possibly a couple more in use by hotels.
Is it still a question of them not wanting to register them anymore from Bangkok, and the authorities are trying to get them off the streets there eventualy?
I would think they would be ideal as a "half way house" between owning a car and a motor scooter. And the moderen ones are clean and efficient, too, i should think

I think this is still current.
There is a quota for tuk-tuks in Bangkok so you cannot register a new one unless an old one gets de-registered.

This one is advertised for private use, I see no reason more people would not buy them other than the lack of safety and air conditioning.

Thailand tuktuk.net :the three wheelers car or tuktuk manufactory in bangkok

Yes, i've seen those places (Theres one in Chonburi, and another factory in Sukhothai too)
Notice, though, how they state things like "be the first in your country to own one"
Meaning that they arent "really" for domestic use
And, the factory in Sukothai has one that has an enclosed cab and passenger compartment
(So , i assume aircon can be fitted)

Several people around my village have and use them. Most take the top and seats off and use it like a truck. One even put heavy leaf springs on his so he can carry heavy loads.

Using them in some sleepy backwater of a village is one thing, and doesnt really answer the question
Having (and using) one in a place as large as Pattaya, however is a totally different kettle of fish.
Are these ones in your village plated, and registered, for instance?
    In other words 100% legal?

I guess you're right if you call Nong Khai a "sleepy, backwater village". Of course it's not as "large" as Pattaya. I know one is registered, or as you say "100% legal".

I would not mind having one of those either, I have a car but as a 2nd vehicle this would be easier to park and maneuver through traffic, a safer than a motorcycle.

Unlike 99.9% of the Thais, (no insult intended) I enjoy being the first on my block to do something, I'm not a follower. Most Thais do not like to chart new territory in much of anything it seems.

Apologies if that came out a bit "sharp"
My point being that, in a place like Pattaya, you can get pulled over for just looking the wrong way at a BIB. In fact, its well known that the BIB target people for tea money.
Can you imagine the field day they would have with unregistered vehicles etc?
Lets just say that, what passes by in a semi rural setting, doesnt in a city one
Now, this one thats registered. Is it registered for private use, or business use, would you know?
Like i said in OP there are one or two in and around Pattaya.....but ONLY one or two, and those are registered by businesses.
As BobR posted, these are ideal little runarounds, so it would be nice to find out the ins and outs of it from those that know.
Ask 10 Thais and you get 15 differing answers, lol!!!
And i'm sure one of the places selling them would only be too keen to do so. Even providing the "red plates" too.
Its when you come to register it "properly" thats the question.

I know for a fact it is registered for private use. He's my brother-in-law. The BIB aren't as bad here as they are in Pattaya, but I guess they don't have to be either. But, they don't mind stopping a person. In fact, several times a week they'll have road blocks. Like most places, if you're legal, no problem. If your not, pay the piper.

I think a tuk tuk has all the disadvanges of both cars & motorcycles, and none of the benefits of either.

Depends what you mean by business use.
I'm pretty certain that a farang cannot register a tuk-tuk for passenger business use as this would need a tuk-tuk license which a farang cannot get without a work permit and of course you will never get a WP for driving a tuk-tuk.

I have a feeling its hard for even a THAI to register one for business use, let alone a farang.
Theres different coloured plates for different uses for one thing. That much i DO know
(I assume from the poster that his BIL is Thai)

So, add in the "farang factor" and its looking less and less likely, TBH, sad to say
