    Papua New Guinea 2007

    Somewhere different for your hols?

Try Papua New Guinea if you want to see how big your Kahunas really are!

Spent 6 months on and off there last year working with a GSM network build and here's some photos of the times.

Anyone thinking Thailand is the most backward, corrupt, full of liars, and all the other things people complain about, then they should go to a real 3rd world country for a while and see how bad things are!

Everything I did while in PNG I had to bribe/pay/lie to, just to get things done.
It was a huge eye opener

Photos uploading now, will put them into topics when done
Please bear with me as it's my first time with pictures

Chances are the locals will be dismantling your telephone masts and selling fthem for scrap. I worked there on and off for a few years, beautiful country but really messed up by crime.

CB: the upload process here on TD is a bit laborious, but once in the gallery they load real fast into the thread, so preserver...

there's a thread here (KM's Pic Posting Tutorial - with pics!)on how to do the uploads if you get stuck...

OK piece of piss now lol

Volcano having a cough as we chugged passed, a little too close for my liking in a crap boat with NO safety gear.

Half way across the sea this day the 'Captain' as he asked to be called stood on the bung under the engine and it fell out! The water pissed in, I shat myself and started praying as he fumbled about for it.
He laughed his cock off and I was really pissed off with him

Duke of York Island in the middle of nowhere but heaps of people lived there and made us more than welcome.
Free food all day long and we stayed in an empty school house they rented to us for pennies. Nicest people I met in the six months and a little tropical paradise.

    Arriving...

view from the site we worked at...

and the view when we left...
don't blame me I just worked for them, beautiful Island with a 60m tower stuck in the middle

Yeah, it's a crying shame of the state of the country when it is such a beautiful place

After leaving Duke Of York Island, I was off to New Ireland which was another 2 hours in a crap boat

New Ireland had the same kind of hospitality, people were fantastic and friendly. I started to think it was a dream job

Some school girls we passed on the road, loved it for us to take a picture, not quite the same class a Thai schoolies with their 2 sizes too small uniforms on lol

Oh yeah, AFROs are the done thing in this country, some crackers

Restaurant and rooms built on a big lop sided tree, 3 stories high and it did move a bit as you went up...

Oil palm plantation which what was the biggest crop on the island...

Not quite sure what this little critter was but they said it was good eating, never got the chance to try as they scarpered off to feed the family!...

View from my hotel room, hotels are ridiculous prices in PNG but this one was nice in Kavieng town called 'Malagan Lodge'...

The high tech police station, they were lucky, they had power!...

Sunrise while driving down the island, awesome!...

a little snake on the road...

washing left to dry after washing it in the SEA!

Is it better just to post a picture in each reply or to do it like this? A bunch for each area?

Did a stint at OkTedi mine - up the Fly River - restoring some Mirrlees Blackstone diesel generators- the locals had stolen a load of copper wire - lovely place and lovely people ( as long as ALL your possessions were nailed down )

Now onto the mainland into the depths of tribal wars!
    The real PNG now
traditional houses, look at the smoke coming through the roof on the left house.
All cooking is done inside these tinder boxes...

    police car...

    delivery truck...

can you see the pattern emerging lol, if you want things to last, beef them up and fit crash bars on the front so you can drive through hold ups, riots etc.

Lae Town market, lovely place to get fresh veggies...

run down chack next to some posh brick houses...

very friendly at first glance but it doesnt take much (ie, not giving him something) for that machete to be waving in the air and him screaming!...

These next lot were only smiling after I paid then about 12,000 baht in 10 days for us to be working on their land. Every day more would poor out of the jungle claiming it was their land and smashing our cars up. Most had gone to get pissed and beat up women and children by this time!...

notice even the kids have blades!

Bridges were shocking off the main roads and were often the points of hold ups because you had no choice but to slow down...

After a few hold ups, car jackings we were assigned personal bodyguards in each car, all ex-police or ex-army in PNG so ALL corupt to a massive degree!
My first guy Philip, hell of a nice guy and even gave me a leaving present (only because I was paying him 20 times the normal daily salary because he carried an arsenal of weapons). here he picked up his friend and nephew to take them on a day trip at my expense lol...

he got fired for going round the hotel bollock naked waving a gun at people, shame because he was the best one.

Next one was a huge guy with a hand cannon of a glock and he wasn't shy of getting it out to assert power!...

The boss of the body guards, with his son.
Nice bettle nut teeth, every boby 'chews' in PNG, 3-4 year olds and up, some towns are stained red everywhere from people spitting that shit all over the place...

another red mouth of a self appointed guard of a site before we got the gates installed and the barbed wire finished...

Fascinating place PNG. Beautiful too, fertile- so much potential, but this won't be happening any time soon. Culturally and ethnically diverse as well (over 700 languages) - I'd love to see more of this magnificent country, but the fact is you are taking risks to do so, and it sure isn't cheap. I went to Port Moresby, Goroka, Lae and Rabaul- not long after the volcanic eruption, what a moonscape, what devestation. As evryone tells you there, the Highlanders are impossible- violent, tribal, drunk and useless workers. Other ethnicities aren't so bad.

    Nice thread.

lol, thats where I speant most of my time. Used Mt Hagen as a base and took police and armed patrols every day into the southern highlands which was a bit hairy to say the least.
Never got many pics down the southern highlands as I used to travel light for obvious reasons. Wish I had a photo of the 6 police with M16s that headed our convoy

missed a couple of nice shots from New Ireland.

a 5 minute boat ride takes you to Nusa Island and you call the bar owner and he sends a speed boat to you. A little Eco-island which is just amazing

A sea eagle that sits on the island...

and a big parrot, vicous bastard when you got too close though

    Here's some traditional dressed folk.
Independence day in a shopping centre, should note it was when they got independence the country went down the crapper. 20+ years of misrule and thieving people in power (you can argue that it's similar here but it isn't, they literally took EVERYTHING from the people)...

she was the nicest girl i saw in 6 months!

Super markets like the ones above had big guards with batons and dogs outside.

If they caught a shoplifter they used to just use street justice and beat the shit out of the culprit. Good in a way but I saw a kid about 12-13 get caught and 5 big guys knocked him to the ground and beat and kicked the crap out of him.
I just had to walk away, nothing I could have said would've changed anything, except me getting a couple of broken ribs and black eyes pehaps

I have some tits oot shots of these type, not sure if it's alowed so I'll wait for a mod to say so. Not really porn, just traditional.

I was there in 1991, the Aussies were worse than the locals, wouldn't let us into their club for a beer. The nearest bar to that being only about 500km away.

Was there no Beer Store or 'Bia Stoa' as they wrote in pigeon...
Never made it as far as OkTedi, that is real remote!

Never seen so many birds of prey in one country, must have seen a minimum of 20 a day. This place had eagles swarming like vultures over a chicken factory.
About 10km outside of Lae, the stench was horrendous when the machines were churning and it was quite far away as well

a track through the jungle, looks isolated but if you stopped your car for 5 minutes and shut your eyes, you would open them to see a whole tribe around your car. Mostly just looking because something happens, big news if someone stops lol.

This was Christmas Day 2007 in Mt Hagen, black Santa was a chuckle. It was a first for me. Good laugh and he gave everyone a little present which the hotel paid for out of the Christmas dinner cost...
