    Understated Northern Charm

Travel feature from Bangkok Post 12 May 2011 - a three-page photographic item, just a few here, link in header for rest

Phrae and Phayao are low-key destinations where Burmese and Lao as well as Lanna cultural influences are well preserved

The governor of Phrae chose to use this Chiang Saen style pagoda as the provincial logo. In addition to the pagoda, the temple also has a large prayer hall adorned with sculptures and colourful ceramic mosaics on the walls and pillars.

Phra That Chaw Hae is designated after those born in the year of the tiger. It might be because this octagon-shaped golden pagoda houses Buddha's relics that were kept in a golden box crafted in the shape of a tiger. This 33-metre high pagoda covered with gold leaf has been regarded as a sacred shrine since it was built in the 14th century.
