    Nan Province

    Capital: Nan
    Area: 11,472.1 km²
    Ranked 13th
    Inhabitants: 458,041 (2000)
    Ranked 55th
    Pop. density: 40 inh./km²
    Ranked 73rd

The main draw of Nan town is the national treasure of Wat Phumin.

The temple is most remarkable for its many murals in pastel tones depicting tales from the Buddha's life. Another temple of some merit is Wat Phra That Chae Haeng, located southwest of town on the oposite bank of the river.
Nan has its share of festivals too. The Golden Orange Festival held in December or January celebrates Nan's most famous export. Parades and floats decorated with golden-skinned oranges take to the streets. The other big attraction in Nan is the annual Dragon-Boat Race, held to celebrate the end of Buddhist Lent in October or November.

    Accomodation in Nan.
In town center, opposite the market, there is the Devaraj Hotel, reception told me rooms are 1500bt, but I could have one for 700 - for one person, 800 for 2.

This is the best hotel in town, it has an atrium with pleasant music and an air-con restaurant with an extensive Thai menu.

Next door we'll find the rustic "Nanfah", rooms from 350bt, aircon, hot water. It also has an eatery.

Suk Kasem Hotel, a run-of-the-mill Chinese style place:

    Fan rooms 180, air-con 350.

Good news is the Thai-Chinese-Italian restaurant next door, one of the culinary highlights of the city:

On "Soi Snow White", off Ratamnuay rd, by any chance?
Been circling around that area, also looking for DeDario's (not sure it's still open), didn't find anything, well, couldn't find Soi Snow White, but a few out of the way Guesthouses I wouldn't recommend.

DaDario was next door to Amazing Guest House.

Last I heard was Dario had been knobbing some Nak Long and his wife had chucked him out so the pizza place has probably gone now.

Oh, I did find "Amazing Guesthouse", which wasn't amazing at all, and a few others, no restaurant there, in fact nothing of interest at all there, and quite a way out of center.

Some nice traditional wood shop-houses nearby:

115bt for the small steak in pepper sauce and a pineapple juice.
Nice, the sauce was the real thing made from crushed green and black peppercorns:

I think it's safe to assume her Swiss hubby is no longer part of the outfit:

12 years ago Da Dario's was a real good place to eat!!Great food !!
Too bad he decided he decided to play"hide the salami"(and get caught)
That's what you get for thinking with your little "pepperoni"
Nan would probably be far too small for him to get away with anything.
Thai gossip can sometimes be quicker than the Internet!

The new DaDario's, on Mahayot Road, about 200yards from the Sukasem:

As promised (in another thread), I asked around about crossing into Laos. As I thought already, the border was open only for Thai and Lao citizens, but word is it has recently closed altogether for reasons unknown.

A good thread Stroller, but I think you've confused the Da Dario moves.

Da Dario's did indeed close at the original location near the amaizng guesthouse. A great shame because it was one of my favourite restaurants in Thailand, not specifically for the food, but for the atmosphere of the place.

And yes you are correct about Dario himself, he was caught out playing away from home and it was the gossip that did for him.

Da Darios is now located on the first floor of the Thai Chinese restaurant you've posted the photo on. Not just the cook but the wife and son of Dario too. We had Christmas dinner there in 2005 - curiously it was closed for Christmas dinner in 2006 ( We met a number of foreigners standing outside the restaurant asking the same question we were asking - why is the place closed on the one night they can guarantee a full house of foreigners).

I'm not sure about the 'Other Darios' I'll check it out next time I'm in Nan - but it sounds to me like a 'Copy'

Of course things may have changed and the reason that Darios was closed on Christmas day 2007 seven might have been part of such a change.

Again its a great shame because really did like Darios.

They moved from the Thai-Chinese location (didn't know it had an upstairs) to where it is now recently (August/September), and though I did not know the original outfit, I can confirm it's the wife doing the cooking, since I've asked and was shown some family photos.

The food is good, but nothing outstanding, maybe standards have dropped.

Two other food tips for Nan are:

Breakfast at the Nan Far Hotel. The owner and his wife will run up a suprizingly good American Breakfast - and not just for guests at the hotel, they'll cater for walk in trade too.

The other place I like is 'Huen-Horm Restauran' run by "Nan Touring' 11/12 Suriyaphong Rd, (Oposite the Best Food Supermarket), Nan - Nan
    Tel: (054) 75 1122;

but again it was closed during my last visit - Bearing in mind this was in the months after last year's floods, perhaps the whole of Nan trade was hurting.

I did ask and the owners said they will be opening the restaurant again soon. Again that was over Christmas NY 2006/7.

And then there is the "Suan Isaan" (If you come out of the Nan Far Hotel on to Mahayot Road, turn left, Suan Isaan is in the small soi to your left just before you get to the traffic lights.

I'm not sure if the standards have dropped or if the cook is just forgetting how to cook Italian a little at a time.

So what was the food like?

When I first ate there about three years ago the food was excellent, but as I said above the restaurant was close the last time I called in.

    Stroller has left the building.

But he might be disguised as Kryptonite.
