Chiang Khong - anybody know about this place?

I have an offer to spend some time in October / November up North in Chiang Khong which is about 140km North East of Chiang Rai - Does any forum member have any info about this town.

I've read reports that it is dead at night and that rabid dogs prowl about then. I've also heard it is a boom town and there are the usual falang facilities. Is there a bar girl scene there?

Many thanks for any feedback. MH.

    Yup, pretty dead.

    Never seen any rabid dogs.

Boom Town? not really, though there's a lot of construction going on. People hope the new bridge, south of the town, will bring in more trade.

Very few Falang fascilities, though they are building a new 7/11.

    No bar girl scene.

    Folk passing through, generally.

In on the bus then onto the boat to Laos and the boats to Luan Prabang.

Some over nighters but not much.

I stayed in the Chiang Khong area between 1978 - 1984. was almost mid way between Sathan and Chiang Khong. It was a nice part of the world back then. My information will be rather out of date. There were still a few other foreigners in the area back then though.

No. Yes. Yes, if you want to meet local women for marriage I am sure there are candidates. If you mean whores then I would suspect there may be a brothel here and there of the type that caters to locals, often with hill tribe girls in debt bondage, not seldom underage. So if you don't care about being part of a system that ruins lives, spreads HIV and fucks up villages, it will be just the ticket. Ha ha (that was a laugh).

Pool: Two pool tables in town (free) - 999 Bar seldom open and Rin Bar
Beer: See above plus many restaurants along the Mekong
    Women: Do you speak Thai?
    Paper: Forget it!

Wonderful town. I'm in the process of moving out.
