Mae sot...acomodation??

Thinking of visiting Mae Sot with the family next month and would like to find a quiet, clean mid priced bungalow type acomodation there, or hotel. Doesn't have to be in the town, as we have transport. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Planning a trip during the 3 day holiday in dec [King#5's b-day] and hope there won't be hoards of BKK people there.
Any other suggestions on places to see, things to do, places to eat etc would be appreciated

I would not miss the opportunity to see one of the most spectacular waterfalls of the kingdom.
Tee Lor Sue, it is situated in Umphang, south of Mae Sot also in Tak province.
It is however some 200 km away from Mae Sot and the route is somewhat challenging but the scenery is great.

Yep, Mae Sot - Umphang is possibly one of the windiest up the hill and down the hill roads in Thailand. This time of year it's probably undergoing repairs in many places since we just came out of the rainy season.

Worth the drive though, the hills are covered in beautiful autumnal colours (reds/golds) as the trees shed their leaves. Really quite spectacular around this time of year.

Have a look here...I was there recently and posted some info about accommodation and restaurants...

King's B'day is a tough time to be travelling...be prepared for some traffic congestion along the way and book accommodation ahead...Mae Sot is a long way from anywhere if you get there and find everything full...

Oh...and I think you'll find the 5th King passed on a long time ago!

Very true, I didn't mean to say don't go, just to be careful. Now is a great time to travel the North. Went on a roadtrip to Nan two weeks ago, it was magic. Hardly took any pictures though, used my crappy camcorder instead, which I regret now.

You could try the Centara Mae Sot Hill Resort, never stayed there myself, but went there for a few meetings, seems fairly upscale. There is also the DK hotel in town, not too nice but cheap. There was a new place just south of town, forgot the name and there also are a few guest houses if you just want something basic. Although I haven't been there in over a year, so I hope this info is not out of date.

Interesting too.

It's a very difficult area to trek though.

Getting to the falls is not that bad.

You can drive most of the way (the highway across the mountains is VERY dangerous though) and then (in the dry season) walk about two, maybe three miles to the actual falls.

Quite pleasant as well.

However, the place is a real hot-bed for snakes.

Giant wasps or hornets as well, plus the usual bugs here and there, plus loads of those giant bees.

I was looking for a family type resort/hotel and did find the Wattana resort had a few rooms available. The Centra was booked up for the holiday. Was hoping for a new place that may not be on the maps yet and fully booked for the holiday....have gotten the best deals and cleanest rooms from the newer places that want to try harder. Today, I'm sending off a deposit to Wattana, unless someone replies with an alternative.

Now, what to do and eat in Mae Sot?? The waterfalls look beautiful but I know my family won't want to go for the trek to them.

And.....is there a duty free on the Burma side where you can get wines and smokes like in Mae Sai??

Mae Sot.....went there/did it, different kind of Thai place with more Burma people than Thai people....kinda interesting with all those beautiful Burmese gils with their long hair and long skirts. Decent food in town. Shopping in the border market was a rip off compared with mae Sai, so I saved by not shopping too much.

made a side trip to Wailey [sp?]....another border town [according to lonely planet, but not] nothing but the end of the road that we saw.

Wattana resort was nicely landscapped grounds, but ordinary rooms and overpriced in high season. should be half priced uring low season.

interesting market on the road back....called the Musar market with fresh veges etc....

All in all, glad to be home......that's why we go on vacation, right??
