Haute Cuisine. (It ain't Timbas but we liked it)

So, yesterday, being Thursday, it was decided that we would go and eat fish. Fair enough I like fish. "Where are we going?" "No problems" said they, "it's very good". So we jumped on the bikes and headed off. A short pause at the bottle shop, and we headed out of the village towards Chiang Kong. Half way there we arrived at this place.

The left and the right. Couldn't get it all in.

Which is just round the bend on the left.

A friendly native greeted us. He's the proprietor.

And we head down to the dining room, carefully.

    It was a tad steep.

We made it safely and settled in.

    Tables, chairs, A/C? apparently not.

    A nice view though.

So this bloke turned up with a barbie thing. He set it up in the shed/dining room place where we were sitting, and seemed happy.

So the same geezer got a good fire going in the hut.

And then went to get the lunch.

This is what he bought back. Bit of a surprise? No! They were fish. 3 of.

Still full of life and vigor. To the consternation of the little one. They kept on jumping and she wanted to know why they weren't "sleeping".

Well spotted Gus. These tasty little buggers were alive and kicking and still in full possession of all their internals.

I did mention the fact but it was made clear that external in put from the white man was not required.

Way kewl spot JJ, but this whiteboy would insist on the fish being gutted and newly dead prior to BBQ.

Yes, I though that at the time but bear with me. It all comes good in the end.

So we had jolly good laughs all round when this little fishy, having been covered in salt, wrapped in bamboo and thrown onto hot coals decided to fin it. Gone, away back to the river of it's forefathers.

No, fell out of Joys hands into the sand still flapping but bronzed, and was swapped for a fresh one. Shit life being a fish in a farm on the Mekong......

So we finally persuaded one to behave, lie still and be cooked. Apparently there's normally a man, a different man who does this but today was his day off. I bet he didn't drop any......

And after a bit of turning and cursing, a bit of blowing on the coals and all that out doors barbie stuff, we got this...................

    Makes you proud eh ??????

But, when you've finished mocking, puking, spitting or just laughing. This was possibly the best river fish I've ever eaten. I've eaten a lot around the world and this was really exquisite. So there .

Once we'd/they'd scraped the black shit off.

So they scraped off the black stuff and got stuck in. It was delicious, surprisingly, but I was wondering why I was getting all that good white meat.

Then I found out. The entrails are considered a delicacy. You poofy white boys can keep you boring white meat. We want guts!.

    A plate of said guts.
