Gen Than Shwe buried by PPP

Burma's top general Than Shwe was the target of the Panty Power Party in Thailand's northern city thrown by the Lanna Action for Burma (LAB) and the Empower women's group last evening.

The general's portraits laid on the dance floor were buried under the panties flung by the women activists as they danced and sang, “Hey, Than Shwe”, to the tune of Take me home, country road of John Denver.

Ying Tzarm, a co-founder of Lanna Action for Burma ,“We are holding this party, because we want the world to know that LAB is still continuing our campaign for Burma, "she said. “We also want to warm up its continued support for Burma.”



Mary Green, another LAB member agreed. “Outside Burma, things are getting quiet”, she said, “but inside, things are getting more difficult for the people to move against the regime. It is up to the people outside who are free to do something to bring change to Burma.”

According to the activists, Burma's generals hold a superstitious belief that their power can be removed through contact with articles used by women below the navel." That why we are fighting them according to their beliefs.”

“Democracy in Burma needs panties,” claimed Charm Tong, LAB's most prominent member. “The brutal regime of Gen Than Shwe can be wiped out through women's power.”

The campaign urges women to post, deliver on fly their panties over to the closest Burmese embassy “any day from today.” Women in Australia, the Philippines, Thailand, UK, US, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Poland and Brazil have already answered the call, according to LAB activists.

The Panty Power campaign began on 16 October following the bloody crackdown by military authorities on peaceful protesters in September.
