| book shop needed good morning all , I am currently staying with my Thai girl and her parents in a small village 100 k from Nongkhai . I have no access to English speaking tv channels or any contact with other falangs , which is making life pretty miserable at the moment. My only outlet is reading ,and unfortunately I am down to my last book . Does anyone living in this area know if Nong khai has any second hand / or exchange book shops ? Thanx in advance, Rawky |

| There was a 2nd hand bookshop on the right side of the soi going down to the Mutmee Guest House. The original hippy owner went back to the States a few years ago so I'm not certain if it's still a going concern. A trip down to Harry's Bar in Udon will give you access to hundreds of books that you can exchange. The Kiwi Bar in Nong Khai used to have a book exchange but it's changed ownership a couple of times since I was last there and is now run by an Austrian. For new books, next to the Village Weaver on Prajak Road there is a large bookstore and a recently opened one next to Lotus (it's the horrible yellow monstrosity).

| And Dasa book cafe in bangkok will also mail books to you. There is an excel listing all his secondhand books. You can call him, pay the money into his account and he will post it to you. Great selection and about 190 ish for a second hand paperback. |

| Somewhere on teak door there is a thread about bookshops in NK, with pictures, try searching, and I do sympathise. If I ever finally do settle in Khon Kaen I have thought about opening a bookshop, there is a great need in that part of Thailand I think, both for expats and Thais who wish to learn another language. Thanks for the offer of an exchange of books . The only problem is thay i only brought 3 books up with me from Pattaya, and to be honest they are not the best i have read. The others i left with my friend , in hind-sight i should have brought them all , but we all know what they say about hind sight . Any way, i go back to the uk in Sept. and return here , after a stop in Pattaya for a day or two . If its still ok with you i will accumulate as much reading material as i can and contact you again when i have some decent books to exchange . Thanks again for the offer, Regards, Rawky | |

| Yes, the book shop next to the Mut Mee Guest House in Nongkhai is still open. It has a pretty good and inexpensive selection of books (inexpensive for this area, that is). There's also a good second-hand bookstore in Vientiane - near the American Embassy (a big sign out front). A couple of others as well, but I haven't visited them yet. I'm sorry to hear that Harry has gotten rid of all his books; I was just planning a visit to his bar (I would always take twenty books and exchange them). That's a pity - I wonder is there is anywhere else in the area which will exchange books one-for-one? Nongkhai or Udonthani or Nakhon Phanom area? And, on 1 September (next month) I am opening a combination of restaurant/bar/books/DVDs and asian handsicrafts/art - in Thakhek! Think they're ready for that? So if you ever take the boatride across the Mekong from Nakhon to Thakhek, stop in at "Sabaidee Thakhek" and check it out - if you're from Teak Door, I'll buy you a drink (I will have the only place in the entire town where you can get a hamburger and french fries or a great chef's salad or a mixed drink - a small menu but everything will be of the best quality - and not nearly as expensive as you pay in Thailand). It's near where you get off the boat; you can walk over. Lots of books. End of commercial. Ralph |
