The Irish Bar in Korat has been around for about five years. During that times it has had three or four different managers and never has been a great success. I like it because:
• It has a powerful air con.
• The interior is very nice.
• It has a proper bar to which you can "belly up".
• It has a fine sound system with good music.
• I can get there and back home, safely, by bicycle.
It's located right next to the Sima Thai hotel at the end of this small soi:
The bar is currently being run by the Anna, the proprieter of "Anna Barber".
You can see the Sima Thani behind the Irish Bar in this shot.
Always a tuktuk or two out front.
First time I've ever seen this bartender. The usual bartender is the guy back by the beer fridge.
Pool table and dart board. I play neither.
Plenty of tables for dining and drinking. The stairs lead to a second floor dining area.
Air con and TV and what appears to be some sort of national flag.
Yet another bartender was kind enough to replenish the ice in my mug of Tiger.
There's really nothing very "Irish" about this bar except for the name and some of the interior. They rarely have anything but Thai beer. They did have Guinness in bottles for a while. The only foreign beer on hand yesterday was "Pete's Wicked Ale" at 160 baht for a small bottle.
Right now they have a "happy hour" special: buy two get one. This means that instead of my usual two beers, I now have to drink three.
They have an extensive menu of both Thai and Western food, including Fish Shepherd's Pie. I've only dined there twice and wasn't much impressed.
I try to make it to the Irish Bar about once a week. I usually get there shortly after they open at 5:00 PM. (They are not open for breakfast or lunch.) And, I'm usually out of there by 6:00 PM. I'm usually the only customer. I have no idea what the place is like later in the evening. However, given the number of ladies working there, it's probably a lot livelier than my photos would indicate.
