    Flooding in Korat

Thai officials opened the flood gates at a dam (Lam Prak Preung) in Pak Thong Chai. This has resulted in some flooding of the Lam Thakhong river; especially where it runs in a rather narrow channel through downtown Korat. Flooding has been reported in the vicinity of Assumption School (which will be closed for at least three days), behind The Mall and around Maharat Hospital.

The following photos were taken by me yesterday in an area two or three kilometers northwest of Sam Yak Phak -- the Khon Kaen bypass. In this area the Lam Thakhong River has no well-defined channel and is mostly a graded, braided stream.

This is normally high and dry agricultural land.

This small village is waste deep in water in parts.

This is where the Lam Thakhong River consolidates into a single, well-defined channel and flows under this bridge. The water is right up to the road here.

This is the location of a flood control gate. It is wide open and overflowing.

The water here is about two meters above normal, right up to the coconuts on this tree. This is the Lam Thakhong River where it flows right next to a wat.

This is the Khon Kaen highway. One lane closed due to this minor flooding.

    Authorities warned somehow...

There were meetings and informations given about the coming flooding but some schools just not took it to the words...

So the case for Assumption, now they have to evacuate the leaving in teachers as going out paddling on inflatable 150 thb plastic boats is a bit precarious finally...

As for evacuating things before flood arrived, well how cares ?

Now they will have to knock down some walls and it will flood further...

The Maharat hospital is a quite bad area i was told...

Wondering how Makro is doing, glad i made my shopping sunday...

thanks for the great pics BH !

Well, it's certainly a problem if its your farm or your village that are under a meter of water. But, I suspect the officials had no choice. The dam was full. They could either hold the water and risk a catastrophic collapse, or let the water out in a controlled way.

Now, if they end up having to release water from the huge reservoir at Lam Thakhong Dam, things could get much worse.

The reason central Korat is having problems is that the river has a very confined channel in which to flow which is surrounded by roads, structures and other development. So, when the river overflows its banks it causes immediate damage.

However, out where I live the rive is really just a massive graded flood plain so the water spreads out very rapidly.

Nice forward planning there. Wait until it fills up then do something about it.

on the left of the pic is the wall of Assumption school. The road leading to the Mooban VIP, nice housing town in the woods, center of city, huge mansions in there, but very badly flooded now...

The river here is may be 2 to 3 meter over normal heigth...

At same place, some were not really affected...

chinese say, where is a crisis, there is opportunity...
