Indian Restaurant To Open In Korat

Riding the bus home from The Mall the other day I noticed a big sign announcing the upcoming opening of Korat's first Indian restaurant. The place is to be called Taj Mahal (how original) and is located near the Labor office on Mittrapap Highway about 1 K east of the Sima Thani Hotel. The sign says "coming soon" without a date.

This is within bicycle range of my house, so I imagine I'll be a frequent customer of the food's any good.

Do they have enough farangs to justify an Indian restaurant in Korat? The Thais don't seem to appreciate the finer qualities of a spicey curry and 10 pints of lager.

Took a TGF to a perfectly good Indian in Brussels once and she appreciated it not one bit. Said something about "Muslim food" in a very disdainful way. I couldn't be arsed to explain the Hindu/Muslim nuances.

Same experience here. Took Ms. B to a very nice Indian place on Saipan. She ate the food, but never expressed interest in going back and always declines an Indian meal when we are in BKK.

My guess is that Indian food uses too much dairy product for the Thai palate.

They'll probably have an overpriced Thai menu too.
After a few Pints, and given the mood, you will be drawn to the Indian.
My wife has actually learnt to like some Indian food.
    Vindaloo is her favourite.

I hate that, you know at best the Thai food will be mediocre but the price is gonna be high, when we goto an Indian or whatever I try to dissaude them from thai food as they are never happy with it anyway so they may aswell try something new and not enjoy it.

^ Yeh right- might as well try something new and not enjoy it, as some old familiar thing they won't enjoy 'cus it ain't cooked how they did it in Ubon, or at that filthy stall in Nerplubwan market.
The whinges remain the same, but at least the falang can suffer bitching on a new topic.

But try explaining that to a TG.

With one or two exceptions not found a good Indian here, In Malaysia we ate Indian tucker a lot, great.
Anyway be interesting to see how it goes in Korat, If its successful there may be an opportunity in Udon or KK. I could brown my face up a bit, wrap my head up.
May even do something with Rigger in KK, how do you think a gay Indian restaurant / Bike shop would go in KK?
There can’t be good living where there is not good drinking

There are a few good Indian places in BKK, like Rang Mahal and Holiday Inn on Silom, but I've NEVER met a Thai who will go near Indian food. Ask any Thai you know. Generally, they consider Indians and the food dirty and unappealing. They're wrong obviously...well about the food.

A group of us used to go sometimes (with Thai partners).

I think GoW likes some of it too.

is it an Indian person or of origin opening the restaurant? Not such a stupid question as it seems...our local Indian is run by a Greek & the new Italian pizza / pasta etc restaurant is owned/worked by a Russian ! (Kanchanaburi)

Every Indian restaurant here in Phuket that I've been to sucks. I quit going quite a while ago.
Some new ones have opened up since. But when they're run by Indians they seem to suck.
There is one passable one run by a nice Pakistani fellow. Food was OK but they would only turn on the AC when you entered. Sometimes the place had that acrid sweat smell. I quit going even though I never got sick there.
All the other dumps have made me sick.
When I go to Malaysia all I eat is Indian food without any problems.
Bangkok is ok too.(I did get some bad samosas once off soi 7) the vindaloo at Bukarahs is bit too hot. The Indian restaurant in the Rembrant hotel is incredible, expensive, but so good it's worth it.

The shitheads around here are expensive and the food sucks, really pisses me off because I do like indian food.
I guess I'll have to cook my own. I got a cookbook I've been to lazy to find and buy the spices. I wonder how you say asafetida in Thai?

I might have to try that one. The main thing that pisses me off about Indian food in Bangkok is that they're not spicy enough.

I have been to Hot chilli in Soi 20 ? that was quite good but bit pricy, it was or still is managed by fat Engrish guy, nice enough bloke for a pom.

I do admire him as he managed the Restaurant working for some Indians. Brave man.

The food at Bukarahs is pretty good. They ask how hot you want it. When you ask for hot it's got plenty of zing.

After looking at their website, I think I've already been there, but it was a buffet lunch, so I had no choice in what I ate. I might try it again tomorrow.

I guess this thread should be moved to Bangkok restaurants. After all this talk, I got an urge for Indian and we tried the Tandoor at Holiday Inn Silom brunch today.

Excellent. Even had some lobster dishes. Price was a very cheap 430 Bt/pp all in. Compare that with the piece of shit Sheraton Sunday buffet a few weeks ago at nearly 2,000/pp, not including drinks.

I will say it is less hot than the Rang Mahal on most dishes. Everything was excellent though. So far, Rang Mahal and Tandoor are the two best places for Indian in Thailand in my opinion. Bukhara not as good.

It's been about three years since I last had a conversation with the owners son of Bukarahs, soi 7 and Sukumvit. He is running the place as his father is back in India. He can tell you where to buy all indian seasonings in Bangkok and he speaks english.

My Thai wife loves indian food and she too likes it hot. She said most Thai's don't like the smell, oil/greese, and dairy products. The dairy products are ok with some Thai's. Most Thai's including my wife hates the prices.

Thank's for the information on the restaurant Buadhai. For sure we will check it out when it is open.

I've chatted with him a few times. He's a good fellow and one of the reasons the restaurant seems to work.
I'll be making a trip up there next month.
