Save One Night Market - Korat

Not far from where I live and right on the main road to Bangkok is the Save One night market. This huge market is open daily, but only in the evening. I think it gets its name from a supermarket that used to be open on the site.

Just about everything is sold here: used books, clothing, electronics, antiques, music and videos, groceries, prepared food, plants, etc.

Prepared food in the building in the rear.

Used books and magazines. Mostly Thai but some English and other languages.

This guy has wonderful baked goods. We usually buy something that he calls "Choco-Balls" (hmmm). He was ought last night so we bought some unfortunately stale chocolate cake. We ate it anyway.

Prepared food in here. Fried luk chin, anyone?

    Pork sausage.

More food stalls. Just about any Thai food is available. We usually opt for Yam Pla Dook Foo. But, for some reason Ms. AC wanted Khao Ka Moo last night.

There you go. A full month's supply of cholesterol in one bowl!

    AC,

Is this the market after Tesco on the way to Bangkok? If so I've been there and it is fun place to visit. Have you been to the food market next to the Hospital in Korat? They have alot to offer aswell.

    Dear Dude,

there are plenty of hospitals and plenty of food places, so i think your question is not easy to answer...

most probably you think the Maharat Hospital, but then again there is 2 possibilities about markets, food stalls on the road where we can find the RC Stadium and other nigth venues... somehow front of the Maharat...
    or
may be the main vegetable market, where you should buy in bulk quantities ? somehow back of the Maharat...

It is indeed. It's about 4 K west of Tesco/Lotus.

And, like Forreachingme, I'm not sure what hospital you're talking about. Too many in Korat.

Behind the Maharat Hospital called Sura Nah Korn Market which is one of the larger market places in Korat. It should'nt be that confusing.
I wish I could show some pics it's pretty cool place with more then vegtables as one member mentioned.

    Sam Yaak Pak Morning Market

The closest morning market to where I live is called Sam Yaak Pak. It's about 2K from the house and gets its name from the highway intersection it sits underneath.

This market gets going before dawn and winds down about 9 or 10 AM. Most of the sales are fresh food items for restaurants and home cooks.

The market spills out from the covered area into the surrounding roads.

I'm always happy to see someone still making coffee the old Thai way with the sock filter and plenty of condensed milk.

Coffee, 5 phatankho and a glass of tea to wash it all down for 15 baht.

The day I visited was Wan Phra so there were plenty of flower vendors selling garlands and bunches of flowers.

I don't know why this lady seems so overwhelmed.

Lots of fresh pork for sale.

And chicken. Those plastic bags on the ground are full of butchered fowl.

    More flowers and veggies.

Now, this is not a very big market; especially by Korat standards. But its easy for me to get to and I'm happy to be able to zip over on the bicycle and pick up some limes or fresh tomato without having to get in the car.

In my opinion, save one market also boasts Korat's finest selection of brown sugar.

Mail delivery quite irregular, up his way.
Still, a fortuitous post. Would not have seen this little gem of a thread otherwise.

Dhans, at 6pm they play the Thai national anthem at the market. Don't forget to stand still until it's finished.

I can't say there are any tips I could give you Dhans. I'm not sure what your used to.
Just one question though. How do you intend to get to get to Phanom Rung ? It's not on a tourist route. My recommendation would be to stay in Nang Rong at the Hotel California. The owner runs guided tours to there. His telephone number is 0818083347 or 0899475449. Not much in Nang Rong of interest, other than 2 sets of traffic lights. Enjoy.

Superman: california is on the list. Not sure yet whether we will stay in Buriram or Nang Rong. The Lonely Planet has ome tips on reachng Phanom Rung involving songthaews. Hitchhiking is also a option, but we onl resort to it when all other options have rn out. The California tour sounds good though.
