    U.S. beef in Thailand ?

Thought I would start a new thread, but keep in the Isaan forum.Have been reading about where the best burger is to be had in Udon Thani. Most are saying TJ's. There are people that believe the problem with the burgers in Thailand is that real U.S. prime beef cannot be purchased in Thailand. Is this true? Some of you know that my wife and I have a cafe/restaurant in Hat Mae Rumpheng. She was getting a lot of request for beef steak. I don't think we have the right grill right now to cook steak properly. Well after I taught her what bullshit means, she said, bullshit, I can cook steak here at the restaurant. Well I said, have at it. We buy a lot of stuff at Makro. I've been with her many times. There is no U.S. beef there. Does anybody know if there are suppliers where U.S. beef can be had? Would it be possible to import U.S. beef stock to Thailand? Ranch them in Thailand. Also, would there be a market for U.S. prime beef in Thailand? The reason I'm asking this is, I'm like a lot of these other guy's that say they haven't had a burger or steak in Thailand that comes close to what we have in the States. I believe, like they do, it's the quality of the beef, or lack of, in Thailand. Probably would cost too much to bring cattle and ranch them in Thailand. It seems though that Thailand hates for anyone to import anything into there country. Any thoughts?

They would die of nasty diseases, most of the manufacturers of beefburgers in Thailand are Thai or Euro so they wouldn't know what a good hamburger was anyway, plus cows are too skinny here so you have to buy fat seperately and mix it into the meat, about 25percent, otherwise it's as dry as cardboard.

Japan has the best beef on the planet. Also the most expensive. DD,is it what the cattle are being fed in Thailand, the particular breed, both? NZ beef is good, Aussie too. But still, where can you buy good quality beef in Bangkok or Pattaya? Should have asked the guy that owns Bourbon Street. Can't remember his name now. This guy has some really good suppliers. Might not tell me anything. Will go to TJ's in Udon, see what I think of there burger. I read somewhere that a university in Thailand was cross breeding a NZ breed with one in Thailand. I'll try to find it again.

A lot of food distributors sell imported meats. Try Foodservices, Beef, Lamb, Seafood, French Fries, Dairy, Import, Siam Food Services Ltd for a start.

The answer is corn. American beef is so delicious because the cattle are fattened on corn. American cattle go to market fat and healthy. In Thailand all the cattle ever get to eat is grass. When they go to market they are skinny and sickly looking. I think if you could fatten a Thai cow on corn the meat would be delicious. But corn probably too expensive here.

Here in Thailand, for the most part you’ll see sickly Brahman wondering the raod side. They can survive this weather.

Beef cattle need better weather conditions to survive

Plenty of decent Australian and New Zealand beef is available, why not try some of that before you go and re-invent the wheel.

We raised good beef cattle in Louisiana. It's muggy as shit down there too. It does cool off some though.

There are many reasons for Poor Thai beef and tastier US product.
    Factors include, in Thailand
    Poor and inbred breeding stock.
    Poor feed sources.
    Inadequate nutrition.
Lack of comfortable grazing sources, shelter and adequate water.
Lack of knowledge of farming techniques and animal husbandry.

In the US the feedlot finishing system makes a significant contribution to weight gain in preparation for market, unfortunately it relies heavily on growth hormones, steroids etc.

There are a few good breeders and suppliers, i think one is called something like Thai french...

If you ask the farm in Chockchai for their best, you probably will as well get decent meat...

This is true, and the difference in taste is considerable when compared to beef producers that do not use growth hormones or steroids. We have quite a few that don't. We have a grocery store chain called Whole Foods. They have a very strict policy of "organic only" suppliers, from produce, canned goods, beef ,pork, chicken. Everything they carry. They scrutinize there suppliers thoroughly. Actually it's run by what I call flower sniffers. Others might say tree huggers. Having said all that, it's the best damn grocery store in the U.S.(IMHO) But it's expensive, very expensive. The quality of the products there is just outstanding.

I've sort of given up on getting US beef here in Asia. Beef from Japan isn't bad, neither is some of the stuff that comes from NZ. The taste isn't the same, but it's fine enough to eat.
