A short weekend at Wang Nam Keaw

Driving back from Khon Kean and heading to the Eastern Seaboard we took route 304 and normally we just have a lunch at Wang Nam Keaw but this time we deceided to stay for a night.

Well first my wife needed her Isaan lunch at a food-stall along route 304 to eat Som Tam (papaya salad), Kai Yang (BBQ chicken) and Sticky Rice. After that I needed my piece of cake and while driving up the mountians of Wang Nam Keaw there is a very nice coffee-shop “Chang Cha-Lood” along route 304 (just a few km’s before WNK). It is a “boutique Tent & Hotel” with a coffee-shop with outdoor & indoor seating (with airco). They serve home-made backery, steak, hamburgers, german sausage and of course a good cup of coffee.

My wife did read something about “Village Farm” a hotel & winery so we headed here to see if it would be a nice place to stay. Already on entering the place it more looked like a jungle. Staff was unfriendly and to lazy to bring us to a room to show. So we had a look ourself but the rooms buildings did look old and un-used, the small swimming pool was dirty. And they still want 4500 Thai baht for the cheapest room?

So we did just hit the road again and did find the brand new “De Bua Valley”, actually so new that it was not really finished yet. But when all done it will be a nice place.

So we followed the road going to “Thap Lan” National Park, and just when you think the road goed straight into a lake the road turns sharp right. Then just 300m after the lake is a dusty road going to your left and when you follow that road you will find a small paradise created by the owners of “Keaw Anongburi Resort”. It has 12 bungalows in a beautiful shaped tropical garden. Each bungalow has his own terrace and the room has TV, Airco, Fan, mini-bar, bathroom with shower. And there is even free Wifi in your room! We really enjoyed staying here for a night and watch the sun-set over the valley of WNK.

As the resort restaurant is only open in the weekend we had diner at “Jungle View” restaurant. It serves Thai, Swiss and German food and has a great collection of wine and german beer. The food was good and the wine tasted great Actually it is also a luxury home stay.

The next day we made a small jeurney in the area and started with a visit at “Mr. Mushroom” a huge mushroom farm where you can see how mushrooms are grown. And of course you can buy mushrooms and fresh vegatables (from their own fram also).

Then we just followd the road until you enter the national park, but as there is actually no entrance there was also no entrance fee. But maybe it was just to early for the park rangers! Following the road in the early morning we had stunning views of the valleys filled with low hanging clouds. Then the road goes all the way up to “Khao Lamang” at a top level of 992 meters above sea-level. Here is a beautiful view-point with camping ground and again a stunning view. As it became time to head slowly back we drove back to route 304 at WNK and from there we took the road to Khao Yai to have a look at the “Flora Fantasia”. This is a floral work of art like a painting but then with beautiful flowers in many colours and of course much bigger …. With thousands of potted plants over a area of 20 acre. It is open from 20 December 2010 until 28 February 2011.
