    Mukdahan Motorcycles

Where is the best place from Mukdahan to rent a motorcycle? Can it be done from the city or should I plan to travel a province or two away to get both a decent bike and decent deal?

I have never noticed a rental place but sure there will be some. If you're staying in a hotel, give them a call and ask if they know or can arrange a rental for you. Would not rent one in another province as riding a small motorbike is uncomfortable over long distance not to mention dangerous.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

Ask at the Huahnam Hotel. Its a backpacker place about 2 blocks back from the immigration on the river. They rent bicycles. They should know whats available.

Ok, not really looking for anything concrete, just want to be positive that I won't be stranded and that a rental service/place surely would exist in the province.

Those concrete motorbikes are crap. Try to rent one a bit more modern, Fred.

I guess not, just called Ploy Palace Hotel and receptionist laughed and said not in Mukdahan, she suggested I go to Ubon to get the motorcycle.

I know the idea of taking one across a province or two is frowned upon and as mentioned unsafe, but could it be this is the only option available? Is dealer delivery a common practice if I were to purchase one outright?

With a Thai, you just go to the shop, buy it and ride it home. Not sure how that would work if your partner isn't Thai.

There is a good motorbike Dealer near Ploy Palace(same road as the phone dealers),with new and used bikes but maybe they hire them out?.

I have farang friends there and maybe one knows about a decent bike being sold, thats if you want a secondhand one but new is best.

If you're going to be around for a while just buy a brand new Honda Wave 110 for 34k baht. Fuel injected get's 54kms/L be easy to resell when you split.
If you want a new bike registered in your name you'll need a non-immigrant visa to purchase it from a dealer. You can register a used bike in your name with a tourist visa.

I did not know that was even allowed! I do plan to stick around and I think that (from browsing classifieds the past few months) that it seems crazy the used scooters with 18k km sell for nearly the same as the retail new.

Not to sound like a dishonest person but with a tip could not a tourist visa holder purchase a scooter that has a rented 3km on it? A rented ride around the block would transform a new scooter into a used one would it not?

I had this delema on Koh Tao, my mate who has a business there says buy new and place it in his name.

Anyway I did not want a new bike and only wanted a decent second hand one.

I spent time looking around and ended up with a 5 year old licenced honda wave for 10 grand.

Changed the papers over to his name and its all good.

If you have a Thai friend you could do the same and if you loose it its only 10-15 k so no probs.

I don't like buys new gear as punters tend to want to steal it.

Yes OK, I'm advising our new friend to be a smart fella and keep his coin in his pocket by getting on the good oil and buying a top second hand bike like I did.
Here's my cracker bike I have on Tao kitted out to carry my dive gear.

If you are intending to travel across the bridge into Laos on your bike you may need to check any regulations/required permits etc.

No I am not intending anything like that. The scooter I intend to just keep at home for local travel. I assumed the best thing to do is rent a car when I go to Laos. Thanks for lookin' out though.

I'm afraid you will be out of luck there.
You will be refused permission to cross unless you have the owners permission and I have never heard of any rental company giving permission
