Unless you're John Rambo. Are you Rambo???? If you are I wouldn't mind hooking up for a weekend with you and checking out Burma and the like.................
I live in 'Nakhon Nowhere'. Nothing much around here- but Ubon City is 25-30 km, so easy enough commuting distance. It's fine for me- I like the country life.Originally Posted by Bogon
Like Ubon, Mukda is both a province and the name of it's main town. It's quite a sizable town. I like both. The idea I get is the OP will be living in Mukdahan town, or close. I could easily live there- and being right on the border has it's advantages too. No doubt the expat population is growing there, but there weren't all that many when I was there- I noticed there were a lot of 'long termers'. Thats good- they are comfortable were they are living, familiar with local ways, and in stable relationships. I get the idea that some places in Isaan, such as Buriram, might not be so much to my liking- mainly because it's expat community is not as stable. Too many straight from the bar scene to the moo ban types, which tends to make for a bit of a bitchy, backstabbing local community. Or thats the idea I get.
Anyhow, horses for courses and all that. Heres a trip report I did a couple of years back to Mukdahan, and Roi Et-

Having grown up in Australia, what is termed 'remote' here is nothing. It's never far from civilisation, if and when you get the urge. Obviously, if you need that sort of stuff around you everyday, you shouldn't choose to live anywhere in rural Thailand. But, in terms of the 'expat scene', to this punter at least it soon got old. I like a few expats around, but not too many. I'm not here to be everyones mentor, shoulder to cry on, or kindly uncle. Get a few expats together, and what have you got? A bitching session, generally. I only like that in small doses.
