Old refugee camp in Ubon ratchithani

    HI!!!
My friend and I will be flying into Ubon from BKK and take the bus down to Mukdahan and to Savannakhet from there. Since I have couple of hours to kill in Ubon, I was really hoping to stop by the old refugee came for Laotian folks in the mid-80s. I can't find the dang site anywhere on the web, I was hoping someone here could tell me the location.

oh and I hope I post this in the right area.

    thanks.

    TC

That's a new one for me. How long was it in operation for?

Well I emailed a friend of mine and once again he is/was a wealth of informnation.

    Here is his reply.

    Dear MeMock,

You certainly don't like using the telephone. I could have cleared this up very quickly with a quick call.

The Lao refugee camp (which I went into many times in the mid-70s) was located behind Sri Patum High school. Most people in Ubon still refer to that area as Soon Lao (meaning Lao Centre).

Go up Chaengsanit Road to Yasothon, through the lights (right turn to Makro, left turn to Sisaket, straight ahead to Yasothon). Turn right just before the twin bridges, up the hill slightly to the left and then turn right. Go down to Sri Pathum school and turn left and drive for about 300 m. There are now a large number of Government centres on the old Lao camp including the cancer hospital, the handicap school, the skills development school among many.

One can still find old concrete roads of the Centre here and there.

    Good luck.

    that is awsome!!

thank you so much...you have no idea how many times I had tried using google map hoping I could identify the land mark. I was there at age 9, old enough to explorer the area, but geography was not my strong point.

    cheers,

    TC

    Hello M,

OK perhaps I need a better map with street name. I still have a hard time finding the place from google map. I googled "map of ubon ratchathani".

I see there is a 4 digit numbers located through out the map, which I assume its a zip code like?

If you can kindly give me the number near that is closest to the site, I may just be able to pick it out using the satelite view.

    thanks again.

    Thanks M,

There's been some changes in our travel plan, looks like we're going to be staying in BKK much longer than plan, so will not be stopping by Ubon at all.

But since I'll be resding in Mukdahan when I retired, i'll have plenty of time on my hand to stop by.

    many thanks.
