Sad news RIP ..I met him when I was up there last year. Very nice bloke, put on a brave face through the obvious pain he was in.

Having a brother and a best friend that topped themselves I always feel sympathy for someone that is forced to take this extreme step, but I gotta say the only two times I went in his bar over 3 yrs ago he always struck me as a grumpy / unsociable looking guy to run a bar.

Was this Steve sick or under financial pressure?

I don't think suicidal people are that particular or rational at the critical time unfortunately.

Didn't know him either but seems being grumpy and unsociable are precursors to suicide.

Shame all around. He's dead and now the family has to deal with it.

He wasn't in good shape when I was there..bed bound for the most part and only showed himself when he felt fit enough..
I think it was a bone disease but I'm not certain.

Quite a pathetic cliche that you always spout out Brit. You have no idea what goes through people's minds when they commit suicide.

Nasty stuff. I would probably off myself as well if I had a terminal disease.

I think if you read the OP you'll find it was a bullet.

Sad that you have to resort to such actions instead of being able to go to a Doctor and be assisted properly.

Never really understood that sentiment. it's bandied about like truth.
I'd say it takes a lot of courage to take your life.

Sometimes the decision to take one's own life is the only one left.

I have known people that have done this and to spare their families the pain and financial hardship and having to go through a long and painful period up until death.

Quite caring and when one thinks about it and by those with the strength and guts to do it.

See Brit, think about this stuff before posting - don't get your opinions from jumble sales, make your own.

Always sad to hear that somebody has weighed up the options and decided suicide is the best. Condolences to his family and friends

Been close a couple of times myself but talked myself out of it the first and somebody got me medical attention the second.

/p.s. link in OP doesn't work, says:

Agree with most on here that it's not cowardly and it does take guts. Terminal illness has a tendency to cause grumpiness. RIP.

Blowing your head off in a place where your family/friends have to scrape you up off a table isn't bravery, by any stretch of the imagination.

It's making a point, if I've ever seen one.

Sorry its pure cowardice - take the easy way out and let your family suffer the consequences of your actions. Fight until you are dead, not take the selfish way out.

Again feel sorry for his family, not for that selfish git.

those of you who have known someone in the depths of despair will understand the suffering that they are going through and know that for them they are able to see only one way out. life must be very black for the depressed.

if he was suffering from a terminal disease then it is even more understandable that he would take his own life before it took him. i dont see thailand as being a world leader in palliative care for the terminally ill, people here are expected to keep their suffering out of the sight of others here.

my brother in law was recently diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, hes only young, the coldness and heartlessness with which the information was presented to him was horrifying to see, and that from one of thailands "best" brain surgeons in one of the best hospitals here. luckily for him and his family he has accepted his diagnosis and is living his remaining year to the fullest. i dont know how i would react to that kind of information and with nothing to look forward to, no hope of any recovery and a not very pleasant end, suicide may seem like the default choice.

we are all going to die, but we dont want to be told the date.

i think you would need to be brave to take your own life, especially with a gun. its painful to think of his despair in his final moments.
