Red Shirt unrest in downtown Ubon (with pics)

When I saw cars like this drive past my front gate this afternoon I knew something must be up at Sunee Grand Hotel not more then 100 metres away.

Out the back there were a lot of police but not much action. Apart from all the police on the road there were many more hiding in peoples front yards.

I walked through the complex and out the front it was all happening. The main road through Ubon had been blocked off. There seemed to be more brown shirts (police) then red ones. The red shirts were there to protest the arrival of someone they don't like from Bangkok. They broke through the first barrier when they saw his car arrive with a full police escort.

News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

The police hardly put up a fight but they had it all planned as another line of police were waiting and with perfect timing pushed them to the side of the road while the car carrying who ever it was made a dash for the rear entrance and got there without any problem.

I didn't see any violence or any arrests, I hope it stays like that. The only time anyone actually looked like getting arrested was this galah who decided after it was all over and they had opened the road to stage a one man sit in!

I had a long talk with a undercover security man who spoke flawless English who said he doubted it is over yet and expected some more trouble this evening. I really hope not as that would have to disrupt the concert tonight which I really wanted to go to.

Interesting. I saw a uteload of red shirts on Soi Siam country Club, near Pattaya yesterday too- no Police about.

What was interesting is that I saw the same thing about a week before from the same place, while having a drink with some TD'ers. This time they were being pulled over by cops though.

Seems there may be quite a few low key protests happening in various places.

Do you think the red shirts would try and block the airport like the Yellows did?

Depends on how much they like getting shot. You can't do that sort of thing without proper clearance, Clarence.

I just found out that it was Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Polabutr whose visit they were protesting. *yawn* no wonder not many turned up for it.

If they did though it would allow a certain 'private jet' to land without interference

Seems as the Thai PM is flying in to Ubon on Saturday. As I type there is a big red shirt protest meeting going on in my shop.

So MM is supporting the reds huh.....underground meetings over pies and peas.

What is even worse than that is it appears you live in one of 'those' estates.....oh my god.....being from Kununurra I thought you would have more taste.

Funny, how you could be so wrong.

18 Red shirts descended on Peppers yesterday. My wife told me that they were the rudest bunch of people she had ever met.
18 people, 18 different drinks and then complained 3 minutes later if some had not arrived.
Packets of biscuits were taken from shelves and only the empty wrappers were discovered after they had left (not paid for)
After the third complaint about the slow service of food my wife god bless her told then that if you want food served in 120 seconds or less then go to the soup shop next door (which a few of them did.)
Tomorrow morning is going to be very intersting for sure.

As for a 'estate' comment - what the hell gave you that idea? I live 75 metres from the biggest hotel in town which is on the main road through town. Gated community my arse - cant stand the things.

    I hope so.

Does the PM fly privately around Thailand or with Thai Airways?

I'm looking for information on Ubon with a view next time i'm in Thailand I'd like to visit.

Does anyone know of any good web sites that would help ??

Hotels versus railway station and all that.

    Thanks.
