Any info on the Pak Chong / Wang Nam Kiew area?

I am about to buy 2 rai in the Wang Nam Kiew area. I will not be building there for some time, but will build a weekend house in the future. So I am seeking information about the place.

Do any of you guys live there?

Any major flooding?

Internet availability?

Closest gym?

Closest farang eats / decent restaurants?

Any info would be nice!

I don't know the area well, but Pak Chong is nice country. Theres a pretty good steakhouse- the ChokChai farm and steakhouse in Muak Lek, on the way to Saratburi. Given the dearth of farang oriented stuff around there, you'll no doubt make it there at some stage. Apart from that, theres obviously Korat.

Similarly, Wang Nam kiao I've just driven through. nice place, but not much farang around- Korat will be your main port of call, as it's even a bit of a hike to get to Muak Lek from there. Both places are in hilly country, fringing Khao Yai national park-I doubt flooding would be an issue unless there are low lying parts I didn't see.

In Pak Chong itself there are at least a couple of English country style hotels, we used to stop there for lunch on bike rides.
There is or at laest was a excellent French style restauarant, had a night out there, good food with good local wine.
Excellent moto bike riding around that area as well.

Shocking place, generally under water, mossies every where, regularly invaded by crocs, neuro syphyllis is rampant. Earthquakes on a weekly basis. Oh, and the locals smell.

There is a winery at Wang Nam Kiew that serves a great English Breakfast.
Back down towards Nadi on the top of the hill is a fantastic Issan restaurant( been on the Tele)

Pak Chong's a great little town with an excellent atmosphere to it. Internet access isn't a problem with TOT and TTandT offices in town, you might have to wait a while for them to set up the extra phone lines though, depending where u live.
It's got a couple of gyms there, one above the Mansion hotel and another smaller one which also has a decent size swimming pool, although you definetly wouldn't want to use it at this time of the year - very chilly indeed.
Food wise, as someone stated, you have the chokchai steak house some 10 km's out of town, there are also a few pizzeria's. The supermarkets have a very good variety of western food in too, and a bakery in which you can find all the herbs and spices you want.
As far as other western contact goes, if you want it, you can certainly have it. There are 3 decent farang owned pubs in Pak Chong, one of which sells western food and the places all have there white faced regulars.

I hope you enjoy the place as much as myself and many others, and don't forget to give me a shout when your in town.

No flooding, internet through satellite or phone, no landline, no gym.
One farang restaurant "Jungle View" nice surrounding, good food but a bit difficult to find if you don't know the area. From the same owner "la Bamba" on the main road. A number of "decent" restaurants open on a regular basis but they mostly cater to Thay as the area is not yet very popular with Falangs.
Very quite during the week, but traffic jams ( no joking !) during the week end in December / January.
Most of the lands don't have chanote but speculation is running crazy in the area.

Not many farangs, no gogo bars, definitively not Pattaya. Houses are far apart, you will need a car, ideally a 4WD.

Internet is ok but probably not the best place to run an internet businss.

I spent a couple of years up there, great people and Pakchong caters well for westerners. There are 2 nice restaurants on thr river just off the main road and there is a gym just going out of town on the right towards Khao Yai. As Perota states you would need a car - 4WD and there is alot to explore around the area aside from Khao Yai. The place is farang friendly and wbfore I left I noticed more and more farang settling there. I hope to settle there some day. Any more info please PM me.

Pak Chong is much more developed that Wang Nam Kiew.


In WNK, your closer neighbor is at 1km, the closest village at 5km, and the closest “city”, Pak Tong Chai, at 40km. And if you want a “real” city, Korat or Pak Chong, you need to drive for at least 80km.

just moved to klong phia near pak chong ... nice place to look at clean n fresh ..... not many falangs around ,not going to well for me at the moment got 30 yr lease onsome land to build house got thai builder /thats a laugh/ gave him drawings for house foundations n footings said he understood ,,, went back 2 days later / first mistake/ he started to build ground level/ heads going down very slowly my head that is ... llf / spoke to thai g/f to find out whats going on she speaks to thai says he will put in footings later / head comes up ready to explode my job in uk was groundwork so i do know what im talking about/after a lot more fk ups goes to builders yard to buy steel for house frame done the deal with thai nice , steel arrives i swear to god it came from the titanic / head has now gone in to orbit /goes to yard thai guy sorry sorry sorry if i am going to get fk i i want to be kissed 1st/alls well n sorted will give me good steel job done nice,,, goes back to new build llf thai builder has built 2 blocks walls 6in apart and 6in wide rebar gage to fit inside fkng impossilbe . thai g/f says icannot say or speak bad ,, isay to thai g/f o yes i can and do .... so now im ready to pull out

waiting for thai g/f who is now ante falang to come and make me an offer if not will just walk away .... so if and when you decide to build make sure you have someone who will be in your corner so to speak / as we know falang is lower than the family dog/ not bitter n twisted life is an adventure and im not dissapointed but would have been nice to have a few years there , it might work out ok for me here in the village who knows.... also when i went to lease land in c.q mr big wanted 30,000 bhat so told him where to go how to get there and what to do when he arrived .... and still got my 30yr lease / i tried but i failed,,, lmfho ,,,, t/c

^ Sorry to hear it spike. If you can come to terms with your GF & decide to resurrect the project, heres a thread detailing my experience, which was pretty good actually. But note what I said in the opening Post- "a wife, whom I trust". My advice- get a fixed priced quote & written contract up front. Leaves no room for pork & kickback.

Our builders can do work in Pak Chong no ploblem- should you want their contact details, just PM me. It's often better Not to get locals to do the job- less prone to local bullshit & corrupting influences.

As for ChokChai steakhouse.....quite possibly the worst steak i will ever have in my whole life. This is including the future......I believe they serve up their comatose shitter cows there.....

Have eaten there twice, first time crap, went second time as convenient and surely could not be that bad all the time as looks a popular and successful place. We ordered 3 steaks.....sent 3 steaks back.....steaks come back....we send away again....come back again, we don't even touch them a third time......shocking.

Bluddy hell, I've got a Big lunch date at ChokChai on the 23rd. We're overnighting nearby, then up to Roi Et next day. But I've eaten there three times now, haven't had a bad experience yet. There are three grades of steak- I always order from the 'second grade', aged 3 weeks or sumfin. Couldn't say about the lower grade- never tried. Wife had one of the 'top grade' charolais steaks once- I thought mine was tastier, so a bit of a rip off. the Khao yai shiraz is nice.
