The booze doesn't just flow, it cascades throughout the entire region. I suppose it all depends on how often you want your bellend buffed.

    That surely goes without saying.

Gary , if you're in need of farang bars in close proximity to the Mekong then Nong Khai would certainly fit your bill...and it's only a hop-skip-'n-a-jump across from Vietienne (Vieng Chaing). Certainly NK's a good size town with an entertainment zone though fairly low-key when compared to sex-Patts.

Then again there's always Udon Thanni , an hours drive south from NK.
Travel safe and enjoy an enjoyable Issan/ Isarn/ Isan/ Esarn holiday.

Gary, if you get down my way, have a bed and can show you around, same goes for anyone out this way.
Ban Sang Hom, south of Buntharik, Emerald triangle, jungle area, no tourists, but plenty of beer.

What concerns me about hiring a car is that a lot of the time you will be driving in the middle of nowhere and if the things breaks down you are fucked.
Don't be so Scottish then and hire a decent car from a decent company. If anything goes wrong help will be there within a few hours at the most.

Try Nonkai. I spent some time there in the 90s building a star mart I have been back a few times and quite liked it. Try the meeting place bar. A nice little bar to have a drink at. A few things to do there a few nice restaurants along the river and a quick trip over the bridge to Vientienne if you can be bothered. Some nice hotels reasonably priced in town and near the river. There was a nice cheap hotel made of units next to the river near Nonkai "beach" just out of town.
You can get a train to Nonkai or plane to Udon Thani and then bus to Nonkai.

Gary please post your thoughts after getting home, you opinion of a maiden trip up there would be interesting to read.

I've been to Udon and Nong Khai, have friends in both places who've been there for years. There's not a big enough calibre firearm that can be put to my head to return for anything but special occasions that can't be gotten out of, then I'm on the very first flight South.

Understandable. If you enjoy the lifestyle in Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket, large doses of Isaan should be avoided. Conversly, if you enjoy the lifestyle in Isaan, avoid Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket like the plague.

There is nothing wrong with Porty. I spent many days there as a kid. Amusement arcades, ice cream and donkey rides along the beach. You could even go for a swim in the sea if you didnt mind a touch of hypothermia..
