    Dirty Police in rural Ubon

Just got off the phone with my Thai wife, it seems my 12 year old stepson was stopped by the police, forced to give a urine test for yaba, he was clean, they said they would plant yaba on him and put him in jail if he didn't rat out dealers in his home town, whom he doesn't know, they now want him to return Friday to go on a buy for them. Is this a common child exploitation practice in Thailand? Are there any laws against this, should we get a lawyer? Any thoughts?

I would have the wife seek out a decent and confident local attorney straight away.

Or, have her talk with a tambon Puu Yai or representative - they might be able to counsel or help in such matters.

12yr old , stopped by the police? On his way to school?
My number 1 son is 18 and the only time he's on his own is on way and back from school .

Maybe they'll ask for some money, instead.

You can transfer that straight to the wife, then.

Return Friday and buy for them. So let's just say the kid returns on Friday with Yaba , arrest him for possession.
    Sounds very risky.
In the U.K. Trading Standards officers get kids to go into small newsagents shops to buy cigarettes underage.

I'd call Jonathan Head. This would make a great story in the news. Cops using 12 year old kids? My gosh.

Big Sky, seriously why don't you go with your wife and speak with the Police Officers so she can express her concerns ? Best to find out the whole story.
If you're not there then you really don't know the whole story, correct ?
Which city is this taking place in ?

Normally police administrators would not condone forcing an innocent individual to conduct a 'buy' of illicit drugs to catch 'dealers'. (IMHO)

Well I've been living out here in the boonies, over 13 years, cops of various uniforms, some on the take, some good, some bad, but I have never heard of anything like this.

Sounds a bit like the gambling scam, wife phones farang husband, she . child. mother etc are done for playing cards. need 10 grand to pay the cops off.

Truth, court fine is a few 1,000 Baht at most, BSC think you need to be asking a few more questions.

    Good advice!

Exposing such graft to higher levels can sometimes be quite dangerous.

Especially if it was their idea in the first place. I go with the talking to the policemen to find out the full story and record the meeting. They may just back down from the whole scam. If not, seek legal help.

At the high school by us the police Yabba test all children every term. There is a teacher allocated to liaise with the police. If it's the same at all high schools then the boy and mother should speak with said teacher.

Don't let the boy do it, it's a scam to get money from Farang husband by his wife.

Bigsky I went back and looked at your first post. You are not in Thailand are you? Something has been lost in translation or hearsay between your boy, his mom, the cops, and you. There is just no way this could be coming down the way you put it. Others have said beware something is up and I certainly concur. The first thing I would do is speak to your son one on one and get his side of the story. Then go from there.

If it is true, tell your son to tell the police to get fvckd
Will only be 1 or 2 turds that will melt away when challenged.

This sounds like a bullshit troll to me.
If it's true have the parents acompany the child to the police station at the appointed time of the 'buy' and tell the cops to fuck off.

There's always that chance - depends on local counsel and hierarchy.

There are those local reps that are in bed with every unsavoury element to be found - and then there are the types that are honest with fine upstanding character who wield influence in a positive manner.

You never know what you gonna get.

I can't believe the boy was stopped by local village cops being as they will live within the village community and are highly unlikely going to upset their neighbours. That's how things are played out here where I live. And being local cops they already know who are the sellers. It's just a case of catching them with the goods. Yabba sellers are about the only thing they clamp down on.

    Big Thanks

I appreciate all the info from everyone, I am overseas and not in Thailand or I would confront them, probably a good thing I am not there right now. I did tell my wife to make damn sure the boy's story is not BS. I sent her a link for an attorney I found online in Ubon. I also told her to not let the boy make a buy or get involved with this knowing that it's a bad place to be, piss off some doper or the cops. I hope the attorney helps out with some advice. She did mention that her cousin is high in the brown suits and wants the cops names and he can paperwork them out of the district, but he has to be discreet too, only the boy didn't get names and they almost have to back go there to identify these cops....will keep you posted since you have been all very informative and supportive. kind regards....
