If that's what you're looking for....
Try London, New York, or Sydney.

Coming to Asia seeking [and insisting upon] things of a Western lifestyle is lunacy.
    When in Asia - adapt.

Read "The Ravens" & "Air America" by British author Christopher Robbins.

He talks about all those 'secret' bases.

    Quite.

But, sadly, a lot of farangs are only here because their pensions don't go very far back home.

I avoid them like the plague.

Maybe he left it unfinished - Isaan women are, sometimes, trash collectors? Performing a necessary public service.

I normally just look and not reply, but some of the bullshit I've seen here compels me to say something. About 10 yrs ago while on holiday I met a lady from Issan working in a noodle restaurant in Bangkok. We kept in touch (phone calls, e-mails, etc.) after I returned to the U.S. Then I went back a couple of more times, met her family, and we finally decided to get married.
Well, after a couple of years we got her visa, brought her to the U.S. and got married. It's been 8 years now, and I couldn't be happier. She is much younger than me, of course, but that hasn't mattered. She's been a great wife, and I couldn't ask for more. I don't send money to her family except on a couple of rare cases, and she even works to help out with household expenses. We are currently building a house in Sisaket, and will be retiring there next year. Just shows that not all Issan girls are such horrible creatures, but then I may have just been the one in a million lucky ones, but I don't think so.
Sorry this post was so long.

Change"noodle shop in Bangkok" to "beauty salon in Samui" and you just wrote my story including building and retiring in SiSaKet next year

You weren't the only one, Phinik. I got a great one too. We help take care of her parents in Thailand a little also, as she helped me when my mother was elderly. There's a lot of self-inflicted frustration taken out on Thai women on this board.

    Correct.

For instance should you be able still to find a Victorian style building in London try the toilets. Some of us might need a leg up.

Apparently Queen Victoria felt she should seem as if she were sitting on the throne when err 'sitting on the throne' so the toilets were built accordingly.

I remember using the facilities in the offices of the old St Pancras and they were quite a height and I must say it was a damn uncomfortable position in which to take care of business

I'm also married to an Isaan lady and couldn't possibly have found a better wife and companion.
