North East travel Ideas

Hey guys,

Hey guys, thinking about taking a few days next week and traveling up North East of Thailand. Looking at doing something with some adventure, water rafting/kayaking, mountain biking or abseiling. Basically anything along those lines?

Anyone have any ideas about where i can start looking, places, url's? I have tried searching on google, but its not going to well at the moment.

Most of the white water rafting areas are in the North on the Pai River. Khao Yai National Park has some but it is seasonal.
Trekking and cycling in Khao Yai National Park is good. If you want a good variety of the stuff you like and only have a few days Khao Yai National Park would be my choice. Also not far from Bangkok. Not in the heart of the Northeast but best described as the gateway.

there,s temples up here by the thousand, fenced in hills to climb, lakes to look at, theres boney half starved cows meandering majestically over the plains, (to bring out the poet in you) sorry, that should read stumbling accross plowed up rice fields,

Traveling up North, to Chiang Mai and beyond, would be a much better option.

^ Disagree. If you want to get away from Tourist Thailand the North East around Loei is fantastic. Chang Kain and the Mekong are still as they should be. Lots of wilderness and Karst Mountains in the region. Very different attitude in that neck of the woods.

Isaan doesn't come close to the North for any of that.

Like said above, a lot of rafting in the north.

However, take a look at Loei Province, rivers, mountains
and still in Isaan.

The mountains around Loei/ Phetchabun are luvly. Well worth a coupla days, and Chiang Kong on the river is nearby for a night or two.
In southern Isaan, Phanom Rung temple is both nice, on a volcanic outcrop with great views, and it looked to me a great little area for cycling (if you like it a bit hilly that is). Hiring bikes though, dunno- perhaps in Surin? Surin would be a good place to overnight anyway, it's not too far from Phanom Rung, and quite a lively town.
City life- Udon Thani has a surprisingly large farang scene.
Other- well you've got the Mekhong in Ubon province- Khong Kiam is a decent base, & close to Pha Taem national park on cliffs by the Mekhong (neolithic rock paintings), Sam Pan Bok or '3,000 holes' is a nice boat trip along the Mekhong- although you'll probably be the only tourists there (we were), and it's quite out of the way in a small town part of remote Ubon province.
A large part of the pleasure of Isaan is just cruising about, pulling over and having a beer in some town or village- the folk are friendly, and always pleased to see you. Make sure you've got a Thai/ Isaan speaker though.
Norton has given you the gen on Khao Yai, both a good and practical choice from Bangkok.
Really, if it's 'action junkie' type tourism you're looking for, the North has got far more stuff laid on for the visitor. Isaan is quite untouristy, which is a large part of it's charm.

If there's a place to rent a decent bike then hit the Nam Nao Raceway.

Or Nam Nao National Park as it's officially called.

Check out the Ban Chiang (World Heritage Site), just East of the Intersection of Hwys 22 & 2096, about 50 km East of Udon. A decent museum, depicting one of the oldest settlements in all of Thailand. I highly recommend visiting the Kong Lor Caves near Thakhet in Laos. Cross the new Thai/Lao Frendship Bridge over the Mekong River @ Nakhon Phanom. Really worth the visit.

Some nice water falls, lots of jungle, a place where the sun first rises in Thailand, but you need to take soldiers with you, badlands. Many places no farang, but me have seen. Jim

Used to get a bit lonely, that's when there was only dirt and bad roads to Ubon, 7 hour drive. Now good roads all the way, less than 2 hours. Plus I went mad a few years age. Jim

I agree Ban Chiang World Heritage site is worth a visit ....not for doing,.....but interesting to look at.....I went there 10 years ago, and returned 4 weeks ago, and it has seen a big improvement, following the injection of funds from the South East Asian tourism fund. They have built a well presented air conditioned museum building, now housing some good displays with Thai and English descriptions. The original excavations are still visible in the outdoors roofed excavation, inside the grounds of the Wat on the left as you drive in to the village.
it is interesting to note that they have now discovered this 2,500 to 5,000 year old civilisation covers a much larger area of Isaan. There are many villages within 100 km now discovering ancient pottery burial sites and lots of legal and black market trade evidently going on in the pottery trade.

For things to do ..........just keep driving about 45km East towards Sakhon Nakhon on highway 22. Approximately 5 km past Sawang Daen Din, (a prosperous market town of about 25,000 people with 9 gold shops. ) Turn left onto a minor road to "Sai Mun" and drive through the village about 5 km on the right from highway 22 you can see the entrance to Birds Paradise resort complex. Bird's Paradise Extreme Resort, Skydive, Skydiving, Thailand, drop zone where they have a well established resort with nice self contained cabins by a lake, plus a very well set up and professional skydiving operation.....including training, tandems jumps and Western international skydiving certified instruction. The Sai Mun Airfield is well maintained and with prior notice they also have jet skiing, boating and quad biking within the resort available. they have a new "Airvan" plus a Cessna 172 for skydiving and also some microlites.

21km South of Sawang Daen Din, there is a large national park called Tam Puang (spelling?) with some mountains and spectacular views from the many temples along the road at the higher points of the park. after some rain I think it would be very pleasant when the streams and waterfalls are flowing, but very nice to visit even when very hot (36c) and dry 3 weeks ago. lots of walking trails and jungle.
