1st time in Korat, suggestions please.

Hi everyone, Thursday 24th, i will be in Korat for the first time ever!
Just need a few pointers as to what to do?
good restaurants, places to see, where i can find good Thai silk (i am an exporter) some of the best ex-pat bars (so i can find out some more info & enjoy a beer or two) also i may need to do a border bounce and i have never been to Cambodia, so is it worth the bounce or shall i just do a 30 extension to my tourist visa at Imm office?
Anything else you think i should know about the area i will be very interested and will buy a beer or two.
    Cheers in advance guys
    Kevin (English)

korat is a good place to use as a central base, lots of good silk in the surin area, not too far away.

As far as thing to do in the city go, there is literally nothing.

There are a few English pubs dotted about: The Sport Pub, George and the dragon, the Walrus and the Ram.

Best place to look for silk is Pak Thong Chai, about 20 k's out - you'll go past the zoo on your way which is worth a look.

My wife is going to the 'Wat Klong Talong' for 3 days of?
i declined her kind offer of sleeping on the floor in the cold mountain and waking up at 4am to prey in the temple....can you believe that? 555

It's not really worth it unless you're going specifically for the silk. Best bet would be to stop off in Pak Chong, some 90 km's southwest of Korat, and have a look at Khao Yai National Park.

Korat is just another moldy concrete dump..

    Word of warning soapy.
The poster known as somtamslap hails from the Pak Chong area.
If you go there, be sure to wear some kind of chastity apparatus and stay seated at all times.
And take your wallet with you.

Join Korat-Farang.com - Index and you will get all the info you need about Korat. I hate the place, but each to their own.

Hi Kev and welcome to the forum. There are a number of things to see in Khorat, it depends on what you like. To the west is the pottery place at Sung neon, where you can check out the ceramic 'must haves', including everything from water jars to full sized Horses. There are one or two interesting temples, including one that has an underground cave, with interesting deposits on the walls. Also, there is a night market, but beware of the professional 'pocket cutters'. One the fringes of the town, there are also a number of garden centers, including a dedicated Orchid farm. I have been searching through some photos, to find addresses for you, but so far, these remain hidden in the vaults. They used to run local excursions from the main square in the town. That one goes to the temple with the cave. There should also be an information office there, somewhere close to where the tour bus parks. Try to get yourself a local map.

I notice that, on another thread, you want to post some photos. There is advice for that in the newbies section. It takes a while to get your head around this, but it is worth it. Best of luck!

    A good 3 + hours drive.

Surin silk products can be easily secured throughout the Korat market areas.

Better make it Two. If you're really stuck you can always join all those old cronies that sit in 'The Mall' day in day out. No don't do that. Better to take three books.

There are many archeological sites near Korat if you have any interest in same. Otherwise, "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy a must have.
