Northeastern residents warned of tropical, hail storms


The Meteorological Department warned Saturday that tropical storms and hail storms could start hitting northeastern provinces from Sunday.

The department announced in a press statement that the high pressure mass would move down from China to cover the northern part of Thailand on Sunday, and would lead to tropical storms and hail storms.

The storms would begin in the Northeast and would later expand to eastern, central and northern regions, the department said.

One killed in thunderstorm in Amnat Charoen


One person was killed and hundreds of homes were damaged as storms hit the Northeast on Saturday night, with the Meteorological Department warning Sunday of more thunderstorms across upper Thailand.

About 250 houses in Amnat Charoen's Taphan district had their roofs blown off and about a hundred others suffered some sort of damage after being hit by hail and thunderstorms on Saturday night, Amnat Charoen Governor Kitiphum Suwan said Sunday.

The damage is believed to be more widespread than reported and the province is gearing for rescue operations in the affected areas, he said.

The storms also damaged at least a thousand houses in four districts of Si Sa Ket, where a woman in her fifties was reportedly killed when a large tree collapsed on her.

The Meteorological Department warned Sunday that widely scattered thundershowers, hail and wind gusts are expected in 15 provinces in the Northeast, the East, North and Central regions, including Bangkok.

Over 100 houses in Yasothon damaged by storms


Thunderstorms and hailstorms early Wednesday damaged more than 100 houses in Yasothon, where several areas were also left without electricity for hours.

The electricity outrage happened after four power converters exploded. With some uprooted trees, two roads also became impassable at some spots in the morning.

However, relevant officials already rushed to remove the trees and installed new power converters.

"The power converters alone cost Bt800,000 damages. We are now surveying damages on people's houses," Yasothon Governor Weerawit Wiwatwanich said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, tropical storms and hailstorms damaged 130 houses in Kalasin.

Thunder and hail storms cut power to several areas of Yasothon and caused damage to several homes early yesterday.




On Tuesday, tropical rain and hail storms caused damage to 130 homes in Kalasin.

One person was killed after being struck by lightening and two others were believed to have been killed when lightening hit a mobile telephone near them.

The weather bureau advised people to turn off mobile phones if outside during storms. "Avoid wearing ornaments made of metal, too," it said in a statement.

There were reports of livestock being struck by lightening.
The department forecast trop-ical storms for most of Northeast and parts of the North today.

Been hot as hell here to as bad as ever for this time of year but interestingly we have had two big electrical storms hit in the last two weeks. Seems like it builds up over a few days getting hotter and hotter until it brews up a storm. I'm happy, it doesn't usually rain this time of year here so the nah baan is looking good.

The mrs did say we had a hail storm with a lot of wind while I was at work. It must have ben good, she reckoned the wind came from one direction then calm then the wind hit from the other direction. Mini tornado?

Freak storm lashes Nan, Chiang Rai


A freak storm lashed the northern provinces of Chiang Rai and Nan yesterday, damaging nearly 1,000 homes. The Meteorological Department yesterday warned that more storms are on the way next week.
In Nan, heavy rainfall and hail wreaked havoc on more than 500 houses in four tambons in Muang district.
More than 100 chickens in a backyard farm belonging to Chuay Kamprom in tambon Chai-satan in Muang district died in the storm.
Six villages in tambon Napang of Phu Phiang sub-district were hit by a hailstorm and gusting winds. More than 200 houses were damaged and several trees were knocked down.
In Chiang Rai, more than 1,000 houses in 130 villages of Muang, Mae Lao, Phan, Mae Suai and Wiang Pa Pao districts were hit by the storm.
Several longan and lychee plantations suffered massive damage.
The Meteorological Department yesterday urged villagers in the North to be on full alert for storms between April 20 to 26. High temperatures, with occasional storms, are forecast for other regions during April 24 to 26.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department has dispatched its staff to help villagers in drought-hit areas in 53 provinces.
Anucha Mokawet, director-general of the department, said altogether 19,887 villages in 53 provinces had been affected by the dry spell from Nov 1, 2006 to April 17 this year.
More than 1.6 million households and 123,201 rai of farmland have felt the impact. Problems had eased in only six provinces thanks to recent tropical storms.
They were Prachuap Khiri Khan, Trat, Chon Buri, Nakhon Nayok, Phatthalung and Yala, Mr Anucha added.
In Nakhon Ratchasima, the relief operation team there allocated 1.6 million litres of water to local residents in drought-hit areas.
Up to 20 districts in the province have been declared disaster zones. Chakkarat, Khong, Kham Sakae Saeng and Non Thai districts were in particularly dire need of water while Dan Khun Thot district was the hardest-hit.

His Majesty the King has told his royal rain-making units to break up the large mass of clouds over the North and Northeast to prevent them from creating hailstorms that are harmful to villagers. A plane named ''King Air'' took off from a rain-making airbase in Nakhon Sawan on a mission to destroy the clouds with silver iodide yesterday and make them drop rain instead of hailstones, said Prinya Sutikoset, head of the royal rain-making operations in the Central Plain.
Silver iodide is used to increase precipitation in the air, which then induces rainfall.
The Meteorological Department has warned people in the North and Northeast to brace for more hailstorms this week, after storms wreaked havoc in Chiang Rai and Nan over the weekend.
Hundreds of houses were damaged in the freak storms. Longan and lychee plantations suffered massive damage and at least 100 chickens died after being struck by hailstones.
Rain-making officials are also committed to making artificial rain to ease drought in parts of the Central Plain and the West.
Farmers in many areas have begun to complain of lack of water to irrigate their farmlands. Some reservoirs in Suphan Buri and Uthai Thani provinces hold insufficient levels of water for use in the dry season, officials said.
The Mineral Resources Department has kicked off a landslide disaster prevention and preparedness campaign in Patong, in Phuket, after a study has found that the beach was vulnerable to natural disasters.
Landslide impact mitigation was needed in the area as it was situated near a hill-slope and was always crowded with tourists, said Apichai Chavajarernpun, the department chief.
The department's study concluded that 51 provinces should be listed as landslide-prone areas.
Most of them are northern provinces. Many highland communities in Nan province have already been moved to safer ground, said Mr Apichai. Jointly operated by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre, the five-year project aims to raise public awareness on the dangers landslides pose and how to protect themselves and their communities.

I have no idea why you would make a statement like that, my TG lives in Phu Sing and by looking at the weather forecast there have been severe thunderstorms and lots of rain, I know my cell don't work during rainstorms, can't get a signal can't receive phone call or make one, same with text message, I sent her several text messages and she dod not get them, also she sent me text messages and I did not receive them either, just a lot of storms in the area right now.
