    Udon-Loei loop by car

We are looking at doing this loop and want some suggestions as we have never been there.

We have about 1 week in total and were looking at flying in Udon and driving straight to Nong Khai stay 2-3 nights then drive to Loei for 3-4 nights and back to Udon for the last night.

1 We aren't sure whether we should stay o/n in some of the smaller villages/town outside these places or not.

2 We don't know whether we should prebook a car online or just turn up at the airport. If it's the same price and there's plenty of cars we would prefer the later.

3 Any side trips from these places would be good.

4 We are going June/July which is rainy season but we've never had any probs with weather that time of year before but we have never been to this area before so advice on that would be good

Eat breakfast on Nong Prajak Park in UT. Stalls are up and running by 7:15 and usually sold out by 9:30 to 10:00. The brown rice soup (jok) and BBQd freshwater fish fillets are the best I've tried anywhere in T'land. You should also take in the stunning Phu Foilom national park (and even the Ban Chiang World Heritage site if you have time).

Be sure to stay at the Mut Mee GH in NK. It's on the Mekong and gets 10/10 from me (Google it). The saigok (garlic sausage) with sticky rice and jao is not to be missed and if you venture further down the river to Ponpisai you can find the blood (black pudding) variety. These towns are where the sausages originate from and they stand out a mile when compared with similar sausages from other places.

You should also look out for the mushroom dishes in Loei. Truly delicious!

I'd stay longer in Udon and only 1 or 2 nights in NK as there's not much there.

    This place is rather nice...

In Loei I'd stay at Muanmanee Boutique Hotel.

Great, fairly new hotel, and only 590 baht per night.
