    Murder in Issan

During the Songkran Festivities in Udonthani an unusually concerned Thai interceded to prevent a fellow Thai from administering a beating to a Falang.Later that same Day the Thai who had been thwarted in his efforts sought out the Falangs rescuer and shot him to death!!

Having had the above related to me I asked the question on "Udon Map" the local Falang chat site. One person confirmed that the incident had indeed taken place, while another while confirming the occurance noted that there had been no details of any Arrest (The perp was taken away by the Police) on the Thai News Chanels, also stating that many things happen in Udon which go unreported.

I then attempted to post asking the question, was it a possibility that the Police were negotiating a payment which would put an end to the whole dreadful incident. And that the above was the reason that nothing was being reported!!

The Thai Restuarant Owner who related details of the Shooting to an aquaintance of mine was genuinley upset, stating that it is always the "Good" People who are Hurt!!

Udon Map who have a policy of approving all Posts did not run my question,in fact I cannot say that I blame them too much,I imagine they like everyone else here are afraid of the Police!!

Just lately I find myself pondering my Foolish preconceptions of the Thai Paradise which was to be my new home and the sad reality of this Tragically mismanaged Country!!

I don't live there so have no real first hand experience but by all reports and from so many things TD posters write about it's obvious that it's a complete clusterfuck.
Sorry to hear about the good samaritan getting killed.
    R.I.P. a good guy.

UD map are afraid of everything, including even slight criticism of their sponsers,

The forum is a waste of time given its obvious bias towards any advertisers.

^ Only a complete cynic would even suggest such an outlandish thing.

And thanks to Koojo for quoting the OP in full in post number 2.

OK, what does snowboarding have to do with revenge killings?

Out in the sticks you gotta keep to yourself. Alway travel with the clan and mind your manners.

Once you get to the house you can as stupid as you want, unless the MIL or better half stops you.

    RIP....poor soul

Out in the sticks is the best place to be , the guys in my village would stick up for and defend me against any interlopers who wanted to do me harm , not because of my undeniable charm but because most of the villagers (200) are "cousins" of my wife and I also employ only locals for any work about the house ,as stupid as it seems after seeing the finished product , but I am happy and feel as secure as one can feel in this lovely place

With the obvious difference that it would be highly unlikely you could buy yourself out of an arrest.

As an old friend of mine once said: "Never upset someone who can beat you, jail you or kill you, and has a good chance of getting away with it".

I suppose if you believe the OP, then it was tough on the guy

but the whole story sounds a little weird, something amiss in the way it is presented

    especially the last paragraph

Andy why is it weird. it happens in Thailand.

My wifes brother got murdered last year, for what we do not know, we were advised to pay the District police, which we did, with him telling us, he would catch the people, we then were made aware nothing was happening in the case, even though the radio station was making a big story about it, and certain names were put forward.

We then found out someone had of paid more, to stop the investigation, my wife wanted to do something about it, i was then advised to leave it alone, which i thought was good advice considering we have 2 kids.

To the OP, sorry to hear about the good guy, seems my wifes brother was a good guy to ?. Be careful the questions you ask, if someone wants to find you, they can.

perhaps you are ok for now, as long as the status quo is maintained.

just see what happens if (and i hope not), the shit hits the fan between you and your wife:

the entire family, the entire village and all the cops they know will be out for your blood, no matter who is at fault, you are the farang and you are the enemy-you have no thai friends.
they close ranks, join forces and will do their level best to nail you at the first opportunity they get.

been there, done that and i sincerely hope it never happens to any one of you.

I agree. Don't be fooled into being complacent. You're a farang and always will be.

Good on you. I have a similar experience here. Lots of Thai friends I've made over the last 10 years would stick up for me if I was getting hassled.

That said, I'm under no illusions. If an off duty copper had it in for me there would be no backs to the wall last stand a la custer, but, they'd probably lend me a push bike to get to the bus station.

There's limits to what anyone will do for you.
