    Real English Curry in Isaan

The lack of a good curry in Bangkok has been well documented on TD over the years, so it's always a surprise when I find a superior product out here in the jungle.

From my experience, the English Curry Renaissance started when The Bookhouse made an effort to give customers a genuine curry experience. They now offer a range of 6 English Curry favourites as part of a full platter. It's big enough to share with the missus and at 300 to 360 baht a pop, you'll probably want to, so not to use up to much of your 65 quid a week pension.

A more recent addition to the ECR is the Aussie Burger Bar's range of curries. Now, I know Aussies know curry like they know real beer, but fear not, Rob's curries are made by a real Englishman and are bloody excellent. The range of chicken curries are a reasonable 150B (I think) and are enough for two portions (unless you're a fat git). The Curry Meister will even take requests. This week I shall be mainly enjoying a lovely chicken Pathia (sweet & sour Persian stylee). Yesterday, I made the mistake of having one of his Phall's for lunch.

I shall endeavour to find some more curry delights in the fine colonial outpost of Udon Stani and report back. I might even remember my camera.

Sounds good. By the way, I think the curry at the Queen Victoria pub in BKK is pretty good. Not a bad place either but definitely overpriced.

Sounds good, but it's a long way to go for a curry, and how much is the cab fare home likely to be...

I'm a bit of a curry strongman and go with the right hard Biryanis... Phalls are for poofs.

There is an English guy down here in Phuket who makes British style indian. He was chef for 30 years working all over the world and doing a few stints in Indian curry houses in the UK.
He has a range of about 8 curries sold frozen to bars and restaurants.
I think they sell for 150 bht if you buy direct.
He also does Naan bread ,Mango Chutney and Lime pickle and a few other things
    Bloody good they are

Anyone remember those Vesta dehydrated curries?

Now, that's what I call a damn good English curry.

Webesite for The Bookhouse is here...The Book House and Coffee Shop - Udon Thani

It's opposite Nong Sim Park and well worth a visit.
It won me over with their 15 baht portions of black pudding on their extensive brekkie menu.
They also have a Mexican menu on a Wednesday, I think (Marmers will put me right if I'm wrong).
    Black diamonds? I shit 'em.

^Did your new house plans have a guest room for 4? Sounds like better food there than in BKK in general. You well know how I hate the city. The kids and wife love the food and atmosphere at Los Cabos on Soi 14 Sukhumvit. You could have thrown a ball on it from your old place. Right across the street from the only cheap good Thai restaurant on Sukhumvit. Suda's. I think the family needs to come and meet your wife have a few nice beers and shoot the poop. Been too long.

In reality by air or train, and get a nice place somewhat near you guys. How long is the drive? Sorry if it seems like I am inviting myself. But i will bring marinaded meat and cook.

When the new house is built, you'd be welcome any time. For now, you'd have to slum it in a hotel.

The only food we can't get here at a good level is Thai, but for me to pay for Thai food it has to be exceptional, and we don't have a Baan Khanitha in Udon yet.

It's a piece of piss to fly up here, but it's a full days drive from Bangkok and the road is not particularly good in a couple of places (the hill east of Saraburi and the road between Khon Kaen & Udon).

Property in Udon is overpriced in my opinion, but there are a couple of places going in my village at the moment. We pay 3500, but they may want up to 7000 for the same type of house. Bit of a long commute for work though...

Seriously, it'd be great if you guys could get up here, but not in April as I'll be in your neck of the woods for a couple of weeks.

It's closed now. There was talk that the Dubliner would take over the lease but this seems to have withered away on the old grapevine.

Lovely place but the location may defeat the passing trade which is imperative given the cost to rent.

Displaying your ignorance of the provenance of pizza, but never mind. Like the Americans with pizza, the British more or less invented the concept of "curry." The Indians (not to mention the Thais) had no concept of "curry powder," a concoction that owes its widespread popularity in large part to the British military.

Many regional variations of curry actually originated through contact with the British. For example, despite long historical interaction with India, the Japanese first began preparing curry based on recipes provided by cooks on British naval vessels; along with learning the gunnery techniques that helped Japan sink nearly the entire Russian fleet in 1905, the Japanese navy learned how to whip up a tasty, spicy stew that would keep for days. Sailors are known to be fussy eaters, and one key to keeping a happy crew is to feed them well. Japanese warships still serve curry at least once a week. Japanese curry is not very much like English-style curry (it is usually prepared now based on roux mixes with bizarre names such as "Vermont curry" and "Golden curry"), but remains a very popular dish. They generally mix in large chunks of spuds and carrots, and anything else lying around. One way I like to have it is on rice poured over a pork cutlet, but this may be an acquired taste.

The curry at the Bookhouse was a bit of a mixed bag, although certainly a big bag- plenty enough to feed two. The most important aspect, the curry, was fine, as was the rice. The paratha was hopelessly greasy though (I could only manage a mouthful), the poppadum mediocre (but who really cares about that), and the nan- while nice enough in itself, not actually Nan bread. The onion bhaji was Ok, and I'm a sucker for them.

My constructive criticism would be that, rather than putting on this giant platter sufficiently large to intimidate a weight challenged American, they just offer the curry with rice, or breads, accompanied by the usual condiments. And drop the paratha- it sucks. Or get it right. I liked the Bookhouse though- wish we had something like that in Ubon.

It's actually a frozen Thai rothi from Makro. And yes, they're terrible.

Tis true. Making naan breads to freeze has been a nightmare.

I have made the same comment, but it fell on deaf ears.

I had a Chicken Pathia for lunch yesterday. Curries look like shit, but this one is on par with the best I have ever had. Only 150B.

I might have another one for lunch today.
