Chulabhorn Dam

I live around 30 kms from Chulabhorn Dam so thought that i'd post a few pics and information for all those who may wish to visit in the future.

Chulabhorn Dam is owned by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and is situated around 125 kms west of Khon Kaen. Travel west through Chumphae and then on another 25kms to Khon San where you will then need to turn left (heading south) at the crossroads. This road then leads to the dam (another 35 kms) which is situated in the mountains. Very little traffic on this well maintained road which makes it a very pleasant drive.










Can someone sort out the photo's for me?, i'm a complete novice as is clearly noticeable.

From top left/right: after negotiating security personnel at the entrance (i have never asked for ID, just let them know you're a visitor) drive straight on and past the Blue Dam sign, down a steep hill and back up again where you will eventually reach a junction. The restaurant can be seen when you turn right as can the dam.

Hey thanks Thetyim, well done sir.

More info as promised:- The Dam itself is named after Princess Chulabhorn (Kings daughter) and is 700 metres long and 70 metres high.
The Royal residence can be seen in picture 3 and the public pavillion in picture 4.

The restaurant in the final photo overlooks the dam and easier access is possible than the flght of steps pictured.

Overnight accommodation is available for those travelling from afar at a cost of 800 baht per night although if members wish to contact me i can arrange accommodation for them at a discount of 50%. I had friends stay there around 4 months ago and they didn't have any adverse comments to make about the standard of the rooms.
However, if you wish to spend the night then i would advise that visitors bring some additional clothing or blankets as it can get rather chilly in the mountains overnight.

Haven't seen any fisherman there but apparently one can hire a boat for an hour or two on the lake, although i believe this may cost in excess of 1000 baht.

There is also a well maintained challenging 9 hole parkland golf course at the same location and i will post some pictures of the course later today.
The green fee is 100 baht for a weekday's golf and 80 baht caddy fee for each 9 holes played. Weekends/holidays the green fee is 160 baht.

Around 3 kms before reaching the dam there is a wildlife breeding centre (not sure of the admittance charge, but there is one). I haven't been there for around 5 years but they did have bears, deer, guinea fowl, etc:

Personally i think this is one of the great driving holes i have played in Thailand.

Best you learn how to do it..not really that difficult...

I'm sure an obliging mod can delete this post once you get the hang of it, so that it doesn't disrupt your excellent thread...

If you want to post the pic in this size right click and select ‘copy image location’.
Be careful NOT to select ‘copy link location’. If you want to show the pic in the full size of the file then first you must click on the pic itself to increase the size, like this.




Now you can right click and select ‘copy image location’.




Now, go back to the thread on the forum where you wanted to post the pic and click on the yellow box of the mountains. This will open the url page. Easiest way for this step is to use the key board. Press ‘Ctrl v’ which will paste the url link of your pic. You can use the mouse to paste with but make sure you delete the ‘http’ which is already there, otherwise you’ll get it twice and your pic will not show.




If you’ve done this correctly you will be able to see some of your pic in the small screen before you click ‘Post Quick Reply’.




If you see the little square box instead of your pic you have selected ‘copy link location’ instead of ‘copy image location’.

Now really, this is quite a process, but once you’ve done it a couple of times you will be able to do it quite quickly.

Thanks for the help KM but i thnk i am a lost cause as i couldn't find 'copy image location' despite following the link. I did however get to paste a larger version of the original photo so all was not lost.

'In need of further training' as one of my teachers once mentoned. If you can improve things i would be obliged.If not no worries.

In the gallery, left click on the thumb pic you want to post... and you'll see a bigger version of it...left click again and it will come up full size...now right click and scroll down until you get to ‘copy image location’ and left click. Now go back to your thread and use Ctrl+V to paste it into the little yellow thingy that looks like mountains...
if you have done all of this correctly, you're pic should show...like this...

Thanks guys, i owe you both greens.

Moving on to more of the golf course, elephants from the national park use the watering holes around the course but only visit during sunrise/sunset. I play the course around twice a week on average and have yet to come across any between 8am and 5pm.
Monkeys also wander onto the course on rare occasions but they seem very wary of humans and as such don't cause any problems.

Caddies are always available and friendly.

The course is well mantained (watered daily) but is not particularly well supported because of it's remote location. Therefore if you wish to play it's almost like having your own private course. Weekends are pretty much the same although there are competitions of around 100 players arranged on the odd Sunday.

If any golfing members wish to play the course i am normally up for a game so you wont be short of company.

I would also mention that i have friends that live in Khon Kaen who think the golf course at Chulabhorn is quite wonderful so well worth a visit.

The course is quite hilly and golf carts are available at a cost of 500 baht per 18 holes.

There are also 2 different teeing areas for each hole. 1-9, 10-18

There are refreshments available at reception and also the 5th tee.

I might be down next weekend to play at the dam with some mates from KK. Does anyone know if they accept the Isan Golf Association member's card?

Next weekend there is a competition at the dam, Gallowspole. I believe it is on the Sunday but many players will be out practising on the Saturday no doubt.

I played in one there around 14 months ago with around 150 players viing for 9 tees (shotgun start). The cost is 1500 baht for golf/caddy/food/drink and also includes overnight accommodation.

No concessions i'm afraid for I.G.A. members, only EGAT members.

Weekends - 160 baht green fee, 80 baht caddy fee for each 9 holes.

Weekdays - 100 baht green fee, '' '' '' '' '' '' '' ''

It can be a quite painful experience, some 7 hours rounds are to be expected at Chulabhorn GC on competition days, so i will be giving it a very wide berth next weekend.

I played Chulabhorn GC on Sunday 18th March and the course and greens were excellent. Always tough there though with so many blind greens.

Only half a dozen people on the course on that Sunday which isn't abnormal.
