tbh I couldn't care less about depreciation, I value peace of mind more.

IMO too many somchais neglect any sort of maintenance on their vehicles, be it basic oil changes or anything else, if isn't completely broken and immovable then they're not spending money on it. When it breaks they sell it.

But, you will pay more in gas because they're terrible on fuel compared to some other similar cars (like the terribly dull Vios or the excellent Fiesta). So you end up paying more anyway.

    ^ nonsense.

In the city, it is the same, similar or better than most other petrol buring new vehicles (12kpl or so); second hand vehicles will be worse. It's not even much worse than a 1.2 'eco' car.

On a run, it is good (20kpl).

Even comparing with a 1.2 'eco' car (say the little Nissan March), doing 70% of miles in town traffic jams and 30% running around the expressway or on longer runs to HH or the inlaws, the combined figures are not much different. Maybe I spend 1,000 per month more than somebody in a March doing the same driving as me.

They are not great on fuel, but they're bettter than a 20 year old Mazda 626 that's a certainty...). A Prius or a little car with a 1.2 engine will do better, that is true. Compared with 90% of petrol cars on Thai roads, the City does better... If you want to have an LPG vs petrol vs NG debate then I'll likely be on your side; but, that's a different debate...

^ that buying a new City is more expensive on gas than buying a 20 year-old Mazda 626? How?

I don't doubt that the Honda City doesn't get the miles to the gallon that some others in the class get, but what's that gotta do with the price of fish?

Quite impressed with your 'proof' though, have you been taking lessons from Butterfuk recently? Now, stop being a tight git, and buy the midget a nice little Fiesta.

^ I have never mentioned a Mazda 626. Our discussion was about the crappy new cars that the sheeple here buy.

^ That's a good point; your first one in a while on this thread. No offense.

To some extent I agree that Thai consumers (and me in this case) are sheep-like, but the financial realities force it; I can't justify throwing away thousands of pounds because I think this colour is slightly nicer than Thais like, or I personally prefer this boring box to some other boring box. There is not that much difference in these cars that I can justify throwing cash away. If something spectacular was out there that I really wanted (I've been looking at Subarus recently, but they are not all that great or different either) then I could justify it. But a Fiesta or City - they are so similar that I'd rather take the one that retains higher value, it's that simple. The Fiesta is not some wonderful piece of artwork that's amazing to drive... It's another box, just like the City, you may prefer it, but it's all but the same to me... I'll keep the cash, thanks...

    It's stopping her.

That being said, she's going to have lessons soon and when she's passed her test, I'll teach her how to drive.

Here is my 14 year old Toyota Corona. The wife has had three new cars since we bought this one. I use it to take the kids to and from school, get me to work, and thats about it. It gets about 10k per liter around town, and up to 17 at 110-120 kph.

About 3 months ago a taxi smashed into the rear and the wife was able to get BKK insurance to redo all the paint. I was getting petrol the other day and a big cop from Don Muang Police station offered me 180,000 for it. He wanted to give it to his daughter. We paid 580,000 new so I feel its been a great car, always serviced on time and 280,000 on the clock.

^ If you buy new (especially a Toyota or Honda) here, and look after it, then you get good value for money over many years; if you wanna sell it then good money will come back to you. Going through the maths, you reckon you've lost only 30k per year (2.5k per month!), or so, on ownership - that's the upside of crazy second hand car prices here...

World's a funny place. I just watched the Brit show Top Gear. They bought cars for under 100BP and drove to Manchester and back to prove it was cheaper than catching the train.

Now the cars they bought ranged from a volvo for 1pound to an Audi for 85! The price of cars in Thailand is scary! No wonder so many people drive bikes.

Surprisingly, she can reach the pedals and see over the steering wheel. She's only 5'. I was hoping she couldn't, but at least she can drive me home when I'm a bit squiffy and pick the kids up from school without hassling me to do it when it's raining.

By the time you work out the difference in other costs over a couple of years such as insurance, tax and fuel, add to that the resale price when you decide to sell, then it probably actually works out cheaper to own a car in Thailand. The initial outlay is possibly more though.

Sorry to split hairs, but it actually makes your comparisson look worse (better depending how you look at it), but mines a 1992. You have pics of a 2001 model
