*Video* End Of A Classic Brand: No More Pontiac

    DETROIT
The Pontiac name plate is is going out of business.
The General Motors brand was known for muscle cars drag-raced down boulevards, parked at drive-ins and roared across movie screens.
The 84-year-old brand has been moribund since GM decided to kill it last year as it collapsed into bankruptcy and was in decline for years before that.
It was undone by a combination of poor corporate strategy and changing driver tastes.
GM's agreements with Pontiac dealers expire Sunday.
Pontiac's sales peaked at about 1 million in 1968, when the brand's speedier models were prized for their powerful engines and scowling grills.

Even at it's peak a nitch market. In the muscle car category GM competed with itself. Firebird/Camaro and GTO/Malibu essentially the same car. Dumb strategy and very costly.

Right FR, Butty boy is talking his usual crap. Some Mustangs and even GM Camaros & Corvettes were great designs and have stood the test of time.

Around Manchester when I was a kid there was a lot of American cars Camaros and the Corvettes I used think I'm having one of them one day, I think there was something to do with the American bases that they could bring a car over tax free so after a while they got left here, they never took them back.

How'd you like to grow up with nostaligic teen age memories of making out in the back of your Deux Chevaux? No thanks, I'll stay with my 61' Chevy.

give me a British sport car or even an Italian any day, far better than the usual American shit

don't even think the French were in competition, so not sure how they are relevant in the muscle cars debate, unless we are talking Bucati

Yeah, if you like spending all your money on repairs that's a good idea.

If you only knew how technically far ahead that car was when it came out, a true innovation.
