Motoring in Thailand and Asia Cars and motorbikes in Thailand and Asia, Where to buy and sell your truck? Where to get fixed and what garage to use. Should I buy a suzuki carry? Will it have a car DVD? Will my travel insurance cover me for driving in Thailand? Or should I just buy a Mercedes or a Honda CRV? Everything to do with motoring and vehicles goes in this section. Do I really need a driving licence in Thailand to drive to Bangkok car hire?

Dual cab pickup

I am thinking about buying a near new ( used ) auto Hilux or Isuzu dual cab pickup for Mrs. TG.
Will be looking for top condition low kilometre with full service history 2-3 years old.
Mrs comes from Udon Thani so local or near proximity preferred.
Appreciate any advice on what price I can expect to pay for this type of vehicle.
I prefer Toyota but the Mrs. tells me in Thailand Isuzu very good?
Had plenty of experience in Aus. buying and selling but am very nervous about buying ex Thai - have seen their idea of service and driving style?

Can't help sorry, but I'd be interested in the same info. Although from what I've read (or remember reading) on the motoring forum I think the suggestion was to buy new if you can. That way you avoid the perils that you've noted plus I think I read 2nd hand prices are over the top.

The Isuzu ain't bad and the Thais swear by em (no biggy there) but the Hilux is definatly the far better vehicle of the two. Why d'ya think third world banana republics always use them as combat vehicels, just bolt a machine gun to the flat bed and your good to go.

Thai Visa classifieds are worth a look, at minimum you'll get a feel for prices.
Used car dealers are absolutely not. You're usually better off buying from an expat.

I second that, buy from an ex-pat, the cars owned by ex-pat tend to be well looked after have a full service history whilst in their care.
The good ones sell quick on Baht and Sold.

Avoid the used car dealers, looked at Pajero's from used car dealers on Highway 2, North of Udon.
The bullshit and lies just wore me down in the end. Like no service history, and no blue book for the car at hand.
If you can afford it buy new.

You will be paying close to new prices for a 2 -3 year old truck and will be better off just buying new.
One thing that your wife could try and that is find a fairly new truck where the people can no longer make the payments. Many come up like this in the villages and some real bargins to be had.

I fully agree with that. I recently went through the process:

Get an old car; all crap and very, very expensive.
Get a nearly new car; high risk (I looked at loads and none of them were 'clean'), and well overpriced.
Get a new car; the only option really. If finances allow; it's probably 100,000-150,000 baht difference or so, where the new vehicle is somewhere between 600,000-800,000, depending on what spec you go for.

I'd go for the Toyota. Both are solid vehicles, the Toyota is number 1 (in many, many markers) for a reason...

I owned a Mits double cab 2 years ago and it wasn't bad for the money. If I was in the market for a pickup now, i'd personally go for the Ford. Second had value is an issue though.

Thanks for all the advice - as for new won't entertain the idea - if the market is anything like Australia I will pick up a 40,000 klm unit costing new around $40,000 for about 1/2 price. Have had several new cars and utes and just can't justify the depreciation for the first 2 years.
By comparison I have had great results from near new and used vehicles up to 200,000 k's.
Buying from an expat on the move seems to be the go from what you say .
Thanks to all.

Thailands car market is nothing like Australia as for 1/2 price you are probably looking at a 7 year old pickup. Pickups here dont drop in value as in Australia

Just as a rough idea the dealers price guide shows
D-max CAB 4LS3.OMT4WD
2002 370,000 BAHT
2003 391,000 BAHT
2004 412,000 BAHT
At a guess this car was probably 750,000k to 800,000 new

You aren't going to get the second hands deals like that of Aus and UK. It just doesn't work like that here.

You can buy a second hand Toyota for around 900k with a few years on it and there is no garauntee of how it's been used.

You really would be crazy to buy a 2 year old car here when a new one might only set you back another 50 -100k.

Hmmm. , might have to rethink a bit from what you say - seems differences in market are extreme.
Utes in Aus ( read pickup for Thailand and USA) are always in demand but dual cabs less so but still popular.
Toyota is far and away the best I have found after numerous purchases.
China has just put a new range on the market here called "The Great wall" a dual cab 4x4 registered on road is being advertised around $21,000 AU.
Owners I have spoken to say they are quite happy - biggest criticism from motoring writers is lack of up to date air bags all corners etc as per latest models - their answer is that there are still many thousands of vehicles on Australian happily driven by drivers who do not have the latest in safety features?

Hey TG, I'm was in the exact same boat as you, looking for a dual cab for the missus. Was looking to buy second hand and spend about 400K. The second hand market sux and also you gotta bargain with Thais. I had a guy nearly put a gun to my head when I opted out of buying a second hand Sportsrider with ultra low kms and no blue book. Definately if you're looking for a few years old, going new is the way to go.

I went with the Mazda BT-50, bought it March this year, dual cab 5spd Hi-racer (if I went back now Iwould have got the low riding model for cheaper and better handling experience, especially in the mountains up in the north, the Hi-racer is just for show, to look like a 4wd without being one). It's been a great vehicle, put 20,000 kms on it so far.

Price was 720K thb, a little less than the Hilux. They go for i think 43K aud is Aus, mine was 23K aud at the xe rate at the time. The Aussies reckon the BT-50 is better than the current Hilux, I know coz the magazine said so. I got the missus to put up the family land as finance, kicked in 200K for the deposit, and I make the repayments. In the unthinkable event that our relationship falls apart, she can easily sell the car to pay off the debt, no one gets hurt too much.

Not too worried about threats , don't know what the score is or why but it seems nobody messes with Mrs. TG's Papa - seems to have many very good friends who take care of family ? - I have tried to inquire but many smiles tell me nothing , I'll leave it at that - it's a different world?

I never used to buy new, but the Thai market is a law unto itself, second hand cars fetch stupid prices, and you could well be buying a piece of crap - go for new.

The wife and I bought a Toyota Pre-runner 2 years ago, and paid 760,000 Baht that

was about 10,000 less than the same in the Isuzu line. What I found was that the Isuzu was a shorter vehicle, in the 4 door version the Isuzu back seat and door are shorter than the Toyota.

And the financing of the Isuzu was more. My monthly on the Toyota is 12,600 (5 speed, 3.0 engine) and the Isuzu would have been 13,400 (5 speed, 2.5 engine)

My Brother-in-law was in the market last month so we went to look at used first,
Mine is a 2008! with 21000 Kilo's on the clock.
We looked at one similar to mine, same make, model, but had 50,000 Kilo's on the clock and they wanted 620,000 for it, and it was still on a Red Plate, (no green book).

Yes, used in Thailand is expensive for a used UP vehicle. (Just my two Stang)

I have never bought in Thailand so am in the dark when you talk about "red plate , green book and stang" - could you explain please.

Talking to the Missus some more it seems she doesn't want a 4 door dual cab but a 2 door what we call space cab or xtra cab with 2 dicky type back seats.

Red plate is a temporary license plate, green book is registration papers. Stang is KB's 2 cents worth.
