Motoring in Thailand and Asia Cars and motorbikes in Thailand and Asia, Where to buy and sell your truck? Where to get fixed and what garage to use. Should I buy a suzuki carry? Will it have a car DVD? Will my travel insurance cover me for driving in Thailand? Or should I just buy a Mercedes or a Honda CRV? Everything to do with motoring and vehicles goes in this section. Do I really need a driving licence in Thailand to drive to Bangkok car hire?

Comparing Scooters: Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki

I'm planning to buy a new Honda, but I think 125cc is not going to be big enough for traveling around Thailand. Is a FI Honda really that much better and if I'm going up in the hills a carbuerated engine just doesn't have the HP. I'm in Chiang Mai and I don't see any used 250's for sale of any make.
I rode a 250cc Suzuki or was it a Yamaha two-stroke from San Francisco to Denver,
pretty crazy. When it got above 10,000' there was no power at all. I got down to 5mph at one point and I thought I was going to have to push it over the top of Loveland Pass.

I bought one of those new PGM-FI Honda bikes. The quality is flawless, it starts every time on the first kick and seems to get very good fuel economy but I was quite disappointed with the performance. Top speed is about 100KPH, maybe 110 on a downgrade even though it is not at red line. So to answer your question, NO, the FI seems to improve fuel economy but not performance.

The FI also makes the engine heaps smoother, With out more idea of what you are really after its hard to say what bike would best suit your needs.
As a hack around bike you cant beat a honda wave

Papa has an F1 and it's very economical. I have an airblade which feels more like a real motorbike. Top wack about 100. Fuel economy poor.

The FI was for my TGF, I have a Honda CBR-150 I bought new 4 years ago. It's not fuel injected and neither are the new ones, which are indentical to mine. It's been a great bike, 62000 kms with nothing but normal maintenance items like tires, bulbs brake linings etc. Top speed is about 135kmh, top sustainable crusiing speed is about 120 and I cannot say enough good things about the bike. It's biggest problem is the seat, which is like a vinyl covered cement block. Should fill your needs and the price is quite low. I ride mine from Ban Chang to Bangkok several times a month with no problems.
