Motoring in Thailand and Asia Cars and motorbikes in Thailand and Asia, Where to buy and sell your truck? Where to get fixed and what garage to use. Should I buy a suzuki carry? Will it have a car DVD? Will my travel insurance cover me for driving in Thailand? Or should I just buy a Mercedes or a Honda CRV? Everything to do with motoring and vehicles goes in this section. Do I really need a driving licence in Thailand to drive to Bangkok car hire?

I didn't think it would be long before the VFR, the CB 250 K4 stroke K5 and the GS 550 made an appearance. Dispatch tool though, CX 500 every time. Except for the alternator problem.

Well, if we include mopeds, my first bike was a Kreidler, and later on the very macho Puch Maxi.

I have never seen a Yamaha with pedals.

A pricey bike today. You could get a nice house in Thailand, for what your Shadow would be worth today.

First bike was a Honda CB200. Rode it for 2 years before "selling" it to a Scouse mate who never actually paid for it.
Got my first ban riding the Honda (thats why i flogged it) and banned from the town of Jedburgh by the sherriff back in 1978.

(Internet piccie, same colour.)

1994 Honda NSR 125rr... Under 25s weren't allowed anything bigger than 125cc at the time. Chix loved it.

Was nice moving to Aussie though to learn that you weren't allowed to have a bike under 150cc. Quite a change.

True not much fun to ride in a strong side wind at speed, but a great wheelie machine.
Hit the power band at around 6000rpm and hold on,vertical wheelies on acceleration.

My first bike was a mid-eighties Suzuki GSX-250L (not too dissimilar from a Honda 250 Nighthawk)- it was a great bike to learn on.

my first bike at age 16 was a 50cc yamaha.
worked bloody hard on weekends on a miniature railway to earn enough to buy the non-runner. got my license, and crashed it three times on the first day i was legally on the road!!!
progressed to a 125cc moto-guzzi i got for free from a friend who could not get it running, then on to a 1200cc wartime harley that i got for free for the same reason.
progressed to a moto guzzi 750 s, which i wrote off into the side of a car, and gained a few ounces in weight in the form of steel plates and screws in my right leg.
then i went on to matchless and beeza, which were already considered to be antiques by then.
had a brief flirtation with riceburner "superbikes" of the day, then settled down to triumph bonnevilles which were out of fashion and ridiculously cheap at the time.
scored a ducati 900ss (bevel) for next to nothing after it was destroyed in a fire, then concentrated on buying up and restoring ducati's, flathead and panhead harleys, dozens of bonnevilles, a good number of nortons, one vincent shadow etc.
busy building a '41 wl at the moment that some poor fella took to the local harley shop more than 5 years ago for restoration, they stripped it and lost half of it and now they are paying me (big-time) to finish the job and get the guy off their back!
my favourites?
good old bonneville, although the best bikes i ever owned were probably the old 900ss bevel dukes.

Yeh that was the tube frames for ya, went a bit like putty when you put them into a sweeper at full throttle, Suzi had the advantage for a while with the RGV's, but then Yamaha came back with the Deltabox frame. I'd still be happy with a RD350LC YPVS though... how much would you pay for a mint one of those now?

Hi Everyone, Sorry No pictures. My first bike was a BERINI 49cc moped in 1965-it was Dutch I think ,Two speed.Took my riding test on a 98cc Excellsior villiers engined with "girder" front suspension once again only two gears. As soon as I passed my test I got a 500cc single cylinder Matchless, manual advance/ retard timing mechanism, with a decompession lever so you could kick start it. Had to put a chair (sidecar) on it as my mate had totalled his Bantam 175cc and was in a plaster cast toes to ribcage. We used to take the roof of the sidecar and feed him in! Las bike was a "pre unit construction " (seperate gearbox and clutch) Triumph 650cc Tiger 110. It had "slickshift" gears,,,,, As you pressed the gear pedal it automatically dissengaged the clutch,,,, good fun at traffic lights when you were expected to hold the clutch lever in then engage 1st. Won many a race with that feature. Ahh ! Happy Days and still alive to tell the tale !

For all those that mentioned the FS1-E, just thought i'd put up a decent photo.

I think my brother had one of these for his first bike. classic...

A cut down mini BSA Bantam ,, 3 gears controlled with the clutch lever gear shift combi lever on the left hand side ,, used to ride it over the fields when I was 13 after the farmers cut the corn ,and then on the road in the dark on the way home , before me dad caught me and give me a bloody good hiding and destroyed it

First was a 1958 Cushman Eagle, then a 90cc Yamaha, then a 125 cc Yamaha, then a 1972 650 Yamaha (damned quick bike), then a 1959 Harley semi custom fat-bob. Out of motorcycles for near 30 years until I retired then I got a 600 Honda VLX upgraded to an 1100 cc Honda Sabre last June. Sweet bike!
