Motoring in Thailand and Asia Cars and motorbikes in Thailand and Asia, Where to buy and sell your truck? Where to get fixed and what garage to use. Should I buy a suzuki carry? Will it have a car DVD? Will my travel insurance cover me for driving in Thailand? Or should I just buy a Mercedes or a Honda CRV? Everything to do with motoring and vehicles goes in this section. Do I really need a driving licence in Thailand to drive to Bangkok car hire?

If I buy a Garmin GPS in farangland and bring it to Thailand how easy is it to change the map?

Tetters: I got a Garmin GPS when i bought my MU7 and in large print in English they warned against downloading update from the internet...something about foking the system...I'll try and dig it our to see what it actually said...

It works a treat though...only problem is the map itself is in thai so you can't type anything in for directions unless of course your adept at the Thai keyboard...
Favs can be added in English of course and the voice is both thai & English...

^ depends on which model you have but it's literally as simple as downloading the map you want...delete the existing map on the GPS and copy the new map on to your unit. it's very easy, not a big deal

^ I keep meaning to do this for my Magellan GPS, but map availability seems to be much more limited for this.

Thai maps for Garman GPS with an SD slot may be purchased on an SD card directly from Garman or on Amazon.com. I have a Garman with an SD slot, purchased the Thai maps on an SD card through Garman or Amazon can't say for sure, and if functions exceptionally well. Voice directions in English and because of the model GPS I have provides street names as well. Would be lost without it. I did a quick search and I see where Garmen has discontinued the SD card. Hummmm. I'll have to look into this a little more. I'm sure there is an option though. Just need to find out what it is.

I have a Binatone X-350 running the latest tomtom maps here in the UK.

Sure it can't be that hard to do for LOS.

I don't think it has enough detail to show you the way around your garden, so I wouldn't bother mate.

I just found this which looks promising so I will post it in case anyone else has a use for it.
The maps are unlocked and the language glitches are explained

1. Thai address search function require Garmin Thai version and use Thai menu.
2. Choose only one language to draw map otherwise it will draw twice.
3. Unzip and rename to gmapsupp.img
Thailand v8.1 EN + Unlocked
RapidShare: Easy Filehosting
Thailand v8.1 TH + Unlocke
RapidShare: Easy Filehosting
Thailand v8.1 EN duo with TH + Unlocked
- Address searchable only English
- POI searchable both English and Thai
- Can draw map English or Thai

I bought a Garmin 200W in the UK about 3 months ago. It has an SD card slot. When I got to Thailand I got a shop in Pantip2 to download the Thailand map and install it for me, they did everything for 800 baht. I've been using it since, and there have been no problems so far.
I saved almost 10,000 baht by buying it in the UK.
