    Registering a Motorbike

Ok, So I want to register my motorbike in my own name to make life easier, but everyone I ask tells me I need different things.

I currently have a non-immigrant B visa and am waiting for my work permit and such which should be through in the next couple of weeks.

What documents and suchlike do I need to own a vehicle here ?

Bob - either AO or MrsQ should be able to give you some practical advice on this.

I think you need a letter from immigration to say where you live, that and your passport should be enough.

I'd heard that before, but when I asked another long stayer here they said I needed a work permit too for some reason. I shall head down to the immigration office tomorrow and try to get a letter.

You must have a non-imm visa and proof of residence.

For proof of residence you can use your WP or a letter from immigration.

Cheers fellas. This begs a second question. What do I need to show to get proof of residence ? Would the copies of my lease agreement suffice ?

The proof of residence from immigration is FREE

You need to have done a 90 day report to confirm your address. Also a pp size photo is needed.

I just went to the immigration office in CM clutching my passport, copies of my passport, passport photos, an a letter from CM Immigration from last year which guaranteed where I lived (but which has just expired) hoping that's that'd be enough for them to give me a new letter. Fat chance. They wanted me to bring documents from my landlord or wife or maternal great-great-grandmother, tabien baan, copies of Thai ID cards etc, and my 25 yards front crawl certificate from when I was six. Next time I think I'll just take a shotgun.
The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

Thats it right there, the WP is cheaper as the embassy must issue a certicate of residence about 50 bucks minimum. Its a joke you write your address and then a consular official has you swear it is right.

Use the same documents for the DL as well.

I think they only accept from the consulate or embassy. 5 years ago I had to do that to get an international DL. But the guy at the DL place told me later a WP would do. Much easier.

No mention of something in Thai from the amphur. But this is the big city BKK not Chachangsao!!

You can also get a letter of residence from your local plod station. Its easier if you have a (good) relationship with a copper as they will probably tell you to Fluck off otherwise. But they can issue them.

In Bangkok that certificate must be issued by the embassy. It says right on the window above where you pick up you DL or INT DL. Upcountry it might be possible.

Wonder if the motor department and the embassy split the money!!!

50 bucks usd 4 years ago, could be more now. And British fees tend to be higher than American.

I tried to use my Thai driving license (yeah, I know ) as proof of where I live, because it has my address on it and is issued by a Thai government department. Not good enough apparently, even though I had to supply a million documents proving where I lived to get the driving license in the first place.

.... and you want to do all of this to make things easier? My (Thai) wife got a motorcycle last year, one of these 50cc Honda scooters. It's still got the generic 999 plates on it that came from the dealer. Obviously, making sure it's registered isn't required from the dealers.

True, but it is still registered to the previous owner who I don't know from Adam (or whatever the Thai equivalent is). After reading the stories on here of people having their houses gambled away etc, I would prefer just to have it in my name. Plus it would make me feel a bit less like a blow through if I actually owned something here!
