Great bikes for real world biking, they will get blown away on smooth blacktop but not all that much of that in Thailand.
On the rough stuff of course. You cannot take those bikes into the rough stuff and expect it to handle well. Quite the opposite in fact.

While on the topic of adventure bikes, I tried out a Buell Ulysses the other week. It gets positive reviews in the bike press but personally I found it awful. It had the weirdest, most piggish handling that I have ever encountered. I also tried out a V-Strom 1000, which was a fantastic bike, good handling and plenty of grunt.
Are we talking about off road handling? If so then yes. But as the majority of the BMW clan I doubt many would take their TB1.2mn motorcycles dirt tracking.
On the road they handle like an elephant on skates.

I am talking on the road and I never mentioned BMW, I have never ridden the bigger GS bikes, so I don't know how they handle.

WOW that is cheap. I don't know how much truth is in it, but I heard the new F650GS twins are closer to 1mil baht.

$7700 about 270,000 Baht, whats a new G650 likely to be here? North of 1,000,000 I guess.

    cost here in /Thailand

I have heard rumors of 215% of value. But to dind out, go to the wevsite for the Thailand transportation department, OR go there yourself and other T-Offices and ask. Bet you get a different answer t each place. Also, go into the Thailand government web site and look up "duties and tariffs. The registration fee, so I hear is based on size of Motor.

At the Chaing Mai Biker Event, there was a new Vulcan 900. Price tag was 446,000B
But, that price included free 1st class insurance and all paperwork including green book. Then go go to the American Kawasaki sight and you will see that bike, new in a 2009 for $8900 to about $9300. So its clear you are paying all the fees up front from a new bike dealer.

Before shopping at a used big bike store, find out the guys reputation. If he ill do all the paperwork, then he is probably honest. Check out bahtsold.com for good used bikes, but stay away from the 2000 Kawasaki advertised by a guy named frank. I dealt with him, and he is rotten to the core. Google big bike dealers in Bangkok and Thailand.

Don't let it go to your head TM, you are full of BS , comparing adventure bikes with fast road bikes is like comparing apples and pears, it is two completely different riding styles. The low down grunt and charm of big singles and the screaming high reving power of 4 cylinder pocket rockets also is no comparison, it is not all about peg scraping corner speed and constant polishing, but real life go anywhere rideability here in Thailand and elsewhere outside perfect tarmac heaven, and for that there is no better bikes than the big and small BMW GS bikes, as numerous bike world travellers and bike tour company's will testify to. Read PeterPan's post again this time let it properly soak in.

Sorry I never made the comparison. And never have. Just mentioned the bigger GS model has a vague front end.
Nor did I mention engines either.
Peterpan mentioned substandard roads. And thus tried to comment in that particular situation. There is no comparison. A GS always does better off the tarmac due to it 19" wheel.
So where is the BS I mentioned.
Suggest you read posts again before you think of making another substandard post.

^BMW 650 GS single, BMW 1200 GS boxer.

^^Was it not you that first claimed that the GS 650 had a 21 front, then after owner correction you now know it is a 19.

Is it not you who said that only a 17 front gives good black top handling, what dedicated adventure bikes come with a 17 front ? so you must have been comparing to road bikes yes !!

Not really, I said the GS soaked up the rough stuff on The MHS loop, those roads aren't substandard by Thai standards, they are just the normal bumpy potholed secondary road found all over Thailand.

If you want substandard, try the 1243 from Wiang sa to Bo Bia,in Nan province, never managed to get over that road without dropping the bike, it would be perfect for a F650.
For what ever reason, if I needed an all rounder for Thailand it would be a F650GS or a GS 1200.
The F650 is almost the perfect commuter, no great shakes on the open road but my 280 KPH days are finished.
Its just the ridiculous price that would make me balk, can't blame it all on duty either.
Kawa & Triumph and even Ducati manage to sell bikes at a reasonable price here, BMW used to, but have just been pumping the price up every year so now they have got to the cream.

No worries. I will be seeing those roads at first hand in a couple of weeks time.

Herein lies the problem. I am referring to the GS1200 not the single 650GS never mentioned it.
Yes the front end is indeed a 19". How often does an owner go dirt tracking on a bike that starts at TB1.2mn? Therefore it will spend the majority of it life on tarmac.
As for the 17" wheel try the Triumph Tiger. Whilst not a true adventure bike. But this bike had been used in many comparisons against the BMW GS1200.

I think Tm catches most of his shit because he makes comments about bikes that he has neither owned or even ridden before and that is what gets him into more shit than anything else.
