| Motoring in Thailand and Asia Cars and motorbikes in Thailand and Asia, Where to buy and sell your truck? Where to get fixed and what garage to use. Should I buy a suzuki carry? Will it have a car DVD? Will my travel insurance cover me for driving in Thailand? Or should I just buy a Mercedes or a Honda CRV? Everything to do with motoring and vehicles goes in this section. Do I really need a driving licence in Thailand to drive to Bangkok car hire? |

| /\ Have looked at them over in Laos and Burma but not yet found one that is worth restoring, all of the ones I have seen have been kept going with non original parts, transplanted motors etc making restoration uneconomical. |

Most of the things that make restoration 'economical' also make it... pointless.

| Frankie, WEll of course you are right, having "restored" several cars over the years, Austin Healeys (2) E type and Morgan +8 and a 1939 Ford V8 Coupe I know there is a point where if you buy right you can get away with only losing about 50% on yr restoration investment, if you don't it more like 80%. Not counting my labor I never even got close to breaking even. |

Still, they drove very nice new ferraris and made a pile of cash. They paid for shit though. Asked me to work for 'em a few times. I did piece work for 'em in my own damn shop. Really loved working on some of the older stuff lot of those engines were built to last a long, long time. If they had materials like we have now and built like that, chassis and running gear might last forever. Them wood framed bodies were shit though.

I understand they have nice smooth power and get phenomenal fuel economy. You see many of the motorbike taxi guys switching over.

| Dis-member | Thank you for that Mr E the Honda seems to be a good start, I don't need anything elaborate and the wheeled space ship does look a bit avant garde Squiz. On the Honda, Quote:
I know of course from reading Smeg's posts that this is quite impossible.

I would buy one too but I don't drive enough to justify the 50000 baht. And I just bought a nice clean used 100cc Dream Excess for 10000 baht from a buddy leaving town. And parking in a place like Patong is a big issue. Watching someone park one of those big space scooters is entertaining.

| If fuel economy is really that important buy a HOnda C50 If not stick to a twist in go model. No need to worry about gear.s Yamaha Mio, Nouvo HOnda copy of that and the suzuki copy are 115cc and excellent bikes to use |

| worm man | The FI honda wave is nearly the best of all worlds. It's got power, handling, and efficiency in one package. The 50K price is also reasonable. A lot of people seem to like those twist go's. Usually they aren't hard core motorcycle people I think. Suzuki and Yamaha do make good bikes too. That said I'm still going to buy a used big BMW GS for touring the countryside and show off what a big macho ride I'll have. |
