Thinking of Buying A Ford truck

Anyone have experience with the Hi Rider 4 door Ford Rangers? What is the service at the dealerships like and is it a dependable model?

You can probably edit that to say "Ford." I had a Ford Everest that I sold last year. That's the same basic frame as the Ranger. Dealer service is great in both Phuket and Bangkok. Very dependable, tight and no problems.

Biggest problem is that no Thais want to buy them in the resale market! Thais only want to buy Jap models. Apart from that, if you are committed to keeping it a long time, they are great.

I own one, turbo is a nice ride. Doesn't go too fast but is quite nippy. Service is a comparative thing generally never had any problems. Oil and filters cost 1300 baht.

Have 150,000 km on Ford Ranger (not high rider). 2 liter engine. Virtually trouble free. Service quite good. Varies on location but not much. Great on mileage but understand bigger engines with 4 wheel drive guzzle pretty heavy. Friend of mine has High Rider and has had some problems with electric windows and door locks.

Agree with Chintee, resale not as good as Jap models.

By the sounds of it Chitown would be better off buying one 2nd hand.

^ It's a damn shame really, this resale value thing. A lot of Fords are owned by meticulous expats who treat them like gold and keep them pristine. I know I did, and I had the top model. But, at resale time, none of that matters. The sad truth is only buy Toyota or Isuzu and forget everything else.

I think if you change your cars every year or 2 then you have to buy toyota otherwise you loose too much, if you keep them till they are destroyed then it don't really matter what you buy

The 2.5 Turbo Diesel engine is very good, but obviously not fast. And, contrary to popular Thai wisdom is not hard on petrol; which is important as crude oil flirts with $100/bbl.

I have never read a good report about Ford in the press.
Owners that I speak to all seem happy with their Fords but the thai press just seems biased against them.

^ It's more than that. They are fantastic in reliability, western comfort standards and fit. But, with the herd, lemming, sheep, or whatever mentality, Thais have rejected them out of hand. Ask any tent dealer. They will tell you only Toyota or Isuzu for trucks.

Even better then, for a buyer obviously. If this is what floats your boat then search around for one like you've detailed above. Perfect!

Will probably keep it for a long.....long.....long time.

I was a Ford man back home and was 100% satisfied.

    Just wondered about Thai Fords!

Was always given a hard time back home....
all the jokes Fix Or Repair Daily

But I never had a problem with any of mu FORDS.

    Then I bought a Chevy 2500 once...........nothing but headaches!

^ Yes, Ant, that is my point. Locate a private ex-pat seller and lowball him. He has to accept. You get a great vehicle much less than comparable ones.

See a lot of the same from the press when it comes to Chevrolet trucks. Foolish stuff given it's an Isuzu with an American style body!

It seems the Ford is the way to go. Saw a deal for 20000 baht down (including 1 year 1st class insurance) and 9500 baht a month.

They are a lot cheaper that their Japanese counterparts.

^ Absolutely the best deal for the best product in Thailand, unless as DD says, you plan on changing it in a few years. The financing plans are the best, the dealer network is 1st class, and the vehicles themselves are excellent (Thailand is the main export base for Ford to the Middle East and many other countries) I say go for it if you're not planning on changing it out.

The 2.5 liter engine is one of the best. I have a pal here in Phuket who buys wheels and deals low mileage rangers. Good prices @ under 300K.

I considered a Ford but my wife talked me into a Hilux Vigo before we moved here last year. I drove an 05 Escape in Calif for a year and loved it. Can't believe how much more they cost here than in the US. My friend in Udon has a Ford Ranger and likes it. But he's a Welshman and they're wierd and all...

I'd recommend Toyota everytime. Vigos are pretty much indestructable, but still cheap to fix if there are any problems.

I have driven them all but the Vigo comes out way on top in every department for me. Done over 100K in mine and its still as tight as the day I got it (wish I could say the same for the missus)

Have a feeling that you are confusing Nissan with Mazda.

Nissan, is, I believe now controlled by Renault and certainly not Ford, but anyone wanting a different vehicle, there is always the Ford owned Land Rover!
