    Near misses

    Had any lately?

About a week of smooth rolling around (these fukin' non-yielding or even looking arseholes) in Issan, this morning I had 3 near collisions on a crotch-rocket.

Still shaking off the last one.

Shorts, t-shirt and helmetless like a hypocritical idiot - as I've poopooed others on this very forum for not being safer.

Gawwwd! That was close!! Moron just pulled out straight in front of me and I missed clipping him by 2" at best. Uggg, gotta get home and change to the car.

Got a bit lost up that mountain this weekend in a dead tree graveyard- glad I had my compass with me and was able to follow the smoke of a fire back to the picnic area; there is no way I would have lasted a night on the mountain thinking about it- got down to -32 last night

It was an exceptionally hot tea!

But seriously though, glad you're here to tell that tale. Those close misses can be rather disconcerting (to say the least!)

    Thanks Ant. Indeed.

Glad you didn't sear ur scrotum.

Regardless of true fault, I blame myself for all near misses and/or accidents.

Like Saudi, I choose to drive in places where I'm fully aware going in - 1/2 of the others can't or shouldn't be driving at all.

Yeah I know that feeling. After my last spill on my bike -- knock really, bastard hit me -- my wife put her foot down and made me sell it because she was pregnant at the time.

It made for a convenient excuse though truth be told because I think I'd kinda lost my nerve after that, clearly remember I started getting these strong feelings of impending doom even thinking about riding. All that being said do still miss it but.

I have a near miss every time I go for a piss in the middle of the night.

Pissing while posting. Or posting while pissed. I can never remember until the next day.

A dozy bint on a motorbike pulled out in front of me recently. Lucky for her my brakes and reactions are good.

You know I always read and hear about Thai's horrendous driving here and yet I see it very little and I drive and ride a lot. That said, I suspect that a great bit of the angst of many is where they came from and their environment, personal tolerance level and comfort zone. I have always raced whatever I have owned so being or getting close to people doesn't even make me flinch. Sure I have seen some real retarded shit here but trust me back in California it was twice as bad on any given day and we do not even have scooters back there zipping around like here. FFS, In California even with all the traffic lights, signage, hiway controls and hiway patrols people struggle to merge onto roadways, constant lane changes on streets, Intersection gridlocks, having to deal with hiways 5 and 6 lanes wide full of asshats of every nationality. We have multiple car accidents everyday everywhere on every hiway. Most are not fatal events but nonetheless people hit each other and sometimes you drive by the wreck and scratch your head thinking "How in the fuk did that twat pull that off?"

I actually quite enjoy driving here in Thailand. Way easier

I think one of the biggest challenges here is the old Thai folks on scooters that forget cars exist and that they have the right away no matter what and just pull out and never look. I have had a few "Near Misses" with a few of them but I just laugh it off because it is what it is. As Thailand evolves from a primarily scooter only country to a mix of cars, trucks, tractors, bigger bikes etc it will be interesting. Suit up, put on your big boy pants and drive.....

I like how they pull into your lane to overtake and come straight at you.

That and how they speed-up if you're changing lanes, to make things as difficult as they can for you.

The art of yield, merge, at roundabouts hasn't quite been mastered.

...possibly because they're worth more dead than alive...particularly if a falang is involved in the accident...

I've been driving for 45 years in a few countries and almost every state, both personally and commercially, and yes, LA and NYC are kinda dangerous to drive, especially with the cell phones, but in all these years and over 2 million miles driven, I've never seen more inconsiderate, incompentent and just plain ignorant drivers than I have here. Every day, every single day, they either come way too close (scooters and cars), cut you off then try to get in front of you with nary a car length there, or don't pull over to the left to let you pass, going under the posted speed limit, which on some rural roads is 50kph,slower than it should be. I now understand why almost 80 die per day on these roads, and it isn't just because they don't wear helmets, though that does come into account of course. The driving test should be harder everywhere, but especially here, as lack of education creates disasters. When I lived in New Jersey, everyone, including 85 yr old grandmothers, drove over the speed limit and defensively, and there weren't the statistics like they have now (again, cell phone usage has changed things everywhere). Playing chicken with a car while driving a scooter is plain stupid. I know a lot think when they die they're coming back anyway (not), but really. Again, many times I've driven in congested areas like NJ, NY and CA, but I really do not want to drive in Bangkok again, although some good shopping for farang food is there.

I could agree with that however if they aren't looking how in the world would they know a falang is behind the wheel, especially with tinted windows as most have these days?

    I love the glacier-speed u-turns. Sometimes it's a 3-point u-turn.

That I fully agree with. The driver acumen here is poor. Better education is key and more time behind the wheel will yield safer drivers. The test they take here is....well... not even a test.

Bangkok is horrific like most big cities and you really can't judge all Thais by the big city driving habits because they are dog eat dog. My wife and I just were in NY and took cabs a few places. Those were some wild rides. While I didn't flinch or care much my wife was quite nervous and held my hand and squeezed it with almost every cutoff, horn honk, yelling the cab driver did.

Don't get me wrong. This place in certain regions and areas is downright outrageous. Bangkok, Pattaya even Chiang Mai can produce some real memorable driving moments. .

In the end I just laugh at all of it. There are retarded drivers all the world. Best approach is drive defensive and always be on the look out. I found most wrecks are due to lack of attention to the road and their surroundings. In California Asians and Indians are horrific tunnel vision drivers. They have no idea of their surroundings.
