Compared to Thailand ... How cheap are cars in the West!

When I bought my first car in Thailand, I couldn't get over how it cost to buy a piece of shite car.

New car prices are approximately the same here as in Thailand, but the used prices ...

Sold @ Auction just last night.

Now these cars have no registration and may need a few repairs given their age, plus a 10% buyers premium
so add, maybe 25-30% to the final price.

I tried to sample a few cars which are available in Thailand.

    2007 BMW 320i E90 Auto 141,046kms

    Indicated Odometer Reading: 141,046

    $4,909 ... BHT 121,000

    ---

2012 Ford Focus Trend LW II Turbo Diesel Automatic

    Indicated Odometer Reading: 119551

    $5,809 ... BHT 143,200

    ---

    2010 Toyota Aurion AT-X GSV40R Automatic Sedan

    Indicated Odometer Reading: 220049

    $3,509 ... BHT 86,500

I'll never get my head around car prices here.

I was looking at getting a new one for the missus and made the mistake of Googling the equivalent back home.

I couldn't find an exact match because the one back home was actually higher spec / optioned yet considerably cheaper so have shelved that plan for the time being.

The last time I looked, second-hand cars in the UK were considerably cheaper than vehicles of a smilar age in Thailand.

Agree on the 2nd hand part, but must disagree on the New car part.

An example I know of for fact is a BMW X5 xdrive 25d is ballpark 4.3 million in Thailand which is +/- 175k Aud, the same car in Oz is ballpark 105k Aud.

    I was gonna say similar.

The example I was talking about earlier was a BMW X1, can't recall the exact prices and difference now but it was roughly $NZ80k cheaper in NZ.

Wonder if differences are somehow related to trade agreements between nations. Tarrifs and the like.

    Could well be.

Still strange though. As far as I know a car like the BMW X1 is manufactured here for export / sale in NZ and yet despite the shipping costs and being higher spec model than the locally avaliable equivalent it somehow works out to cost way more!?

Buggered if I know. Because math and stuff.

Me too. All gets complicated when local sales tax, import tax and the like get factored in.

^^^^ HW ... that price difference might be due to the huge tax Thailand places on some overseas manufactured cars.

    Try this ...

Bog standard Honda Jazz ... 2018 Honda Jazz VTi Auto MY19

    $16,990 = BHT 420,000

    https://www.redbook.com.au/cars/deta...OT-ITM-501481/

How much is it in Thailand?

    Ain't that the truth ^
I needed a car a few years ago so, put up a post on FB to see if any of my friends had one they wanted to get rid of.
Had 2 offers for $500 each.
Bought the Pontiac Grand Prix (22 years old, owned by a 92 year old guy who put 82,000 miles on it and kept it in the garage.
Now, people say it's an "Old man car" but it starts everytime, has no problems and I open the doors with a key.

I probably owned 25 cars in my life. The most I ever paid for one was $3,000 in the US>
Had to pay 254,000 baht here for a 10 year old pickup truck. Still running though.
I'm good at keeping junk running.
    Lots of practice.

Car price cost is all about taxes, not the real value of the vehicle, each country/state has differing tax levels, Australia new car prices are high.
New cars are nearly all imported and incur lots of tax, from federal to state, used cars are cheaper as there are still a lot of locally made cars on the road, which were taxed at a much lower level.

You can buy a car in the uk from the auctions or off ebay for under 30,000baht that will last forever and probably look better than the average two year old Thai car.
I thought Australia was expensive for cars till i visited Thailand.

100,000 baht for a Ford Cortina estate 20 years ago, what a piss take.

Could buy a fleet of jam jars and set up your own second hand car sales pitch with that kinda wonga in Manchester..
