Yeah I remember that about them as well - surprisingly shite performance for what they were.

Still always had a bit of a soft spot for Cortinas and Escorts. Mate of mine had a Mk1 Escort with a V6 in it and we had some epic races with that and my RX2.

And I've always found the variants fascinating also. Been trying with no joy yet to find an ad I saw recently for an XW GT for sale that was the South African version.

^Do your homework well on the SA GT's. I don't know a lot about them but do know there's not much love for them when it comes to values (compared to Australian delivered GT's). No idea what the difference(s) in spec were but if prices are anything to go by, they're not the same cars.

^ I'm pretty sure the parts were made in oz and the car was assembled in SA.

Oh yeah, I have practically zero interest in buying one myself just interested in the oddity value of it all. Spec wise I think they were practically identical though - just a few cosmetic differences and they were badged as Fairmonts.

I think most of the value difference lies in the fact they're just not seen as 'original'.

I also recently came across a VH Valiant in SA spec and that was equipped with a slant 225 oddly enough.

Sold it to a couple of kids.

Got a speeding fine photo within a couple of days and a couple of weeks later a strong knock at the door.

Was the Coppers. The Cortina had been used in a Bottle Shop (Liquor Store) robbery.

All sorted ... interesting time though.

The Ford 'straight 6' motor has been almost the same for generations. Called the 'Barra' motor.

I currently drive, in the West, a LPG Falcon with the 4.1 Barra Motor in it.

Ford 6's all suffer from the same serious design flaw...

    They aren't Chrysler Hemi 6's

This doesn't really count as a 'if only I'd known' because I never owned one but given this particular example is currently for sale at AU$250,000 I probably won't ever either:

I'll have to satisfy myself with an E37 or E38 if I can find one.

Ps. It's faster than the Phase III also

The GTHO Phase III was designed and built for 1 reason only.

That was to win the Bathurst 500.

Holden had dropped pushing the the similar sized and powered Monaro in favour of the smaller Torano GTR XU-1.

The XU-1 was more agile, cheaper and more economical, but the GTHO Falcons went all out for power that they had on the Bathurst straights.

Allan Moffat completed the 500 miles first followed by other GTHOs in second and third place and filling six of the top seven places.

I believe they could keep pace with a GTHO up to around 100mph, then the law of cubic inches inches kicked in and the Charger faded away. And there was no contest on top end, HO's were good for around 147mph.

    Exaggerating again Mr. Blowhard!

At Bathhurst they never disabled the rev limiter because they would have blown the engine up.

Mid to high 130's were the top end speed in perfect conditions on that racing circuit.

^Make a total cvnt-hat out of himself, again....

The Phase III’s top speed was *228km/h, constrained by the 6150rpm limiter in top gear; race cars could rev to 7000rpm. Key to this speed was the upgraded 5.8-litre (351ci) Cleveland V8 under the bonnet.

    *228kph = 142mph.

    https://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.a...specifications

Phase III defo had a higher top end but the Charger handled better

Edit: actually I should’ve said quicker not faster

Can you show some credible links saying 130's was all they had in them?. Not official Ford PR figures though that will probably have them lucky to make 300hp and 120mph, for reasons you wouldn't understand.

Gotcha. For sure there's a difference between quick and fast cars and we really need to go to makers like Ferrari to get both in one car.

Well we've already had people offer up a Mini and a Cortina as Muscle cars so all we need now is for you to throw the dog-cock red Fiat X-19 you bought from R's Lovers Motors into the mix...

    Speaking of which so:

    R/T E49 Charger 0-100km/h 6.1sec;
Phase III GTHO 0-100km/h 6.4sec; and
    taxi’s vaunted Mini Cooper S 0-100 km/h...

    ...10.9 sec
