my 2 satang is to get a 2nd hand car from the owner...don't go to a used car sales place.

it will take some looking and maybe a trip or two to another town...but if you have 200k as the top price, then you need to poke around.

...and also consider the cost of repairing things you didn't notice before you bought it.

you can indeed get a driveable car. consider small things minor (sorry this is obvious) and take the cheapest car with the strongest motor, suspension, and transmission. everything else can be replaced at a decent price.

also, if your wife is from there, ask mechanics and other folks. you might be able to get a car that has had one RESPONSIBLE owner.

over 500k, id say those thoroughly inspected cars are a good bet.

they have to make their money...and they do. but for 150k-200k...well, i would think the pickings would be quite slim. (the page doesnt load for me, so i didnt check it). but having owned a couple of cars in LOS- one used- i would say that a used car salesman can be every bit as dishonest as any individual. ...just be sure to take it to a TRUSTED mechanic and have them spend an hour going over it. well worth the cost.

as for Fiesta as mentioned by Jim, i was gonna get one for the missus until i read all about the gearbox problems

i'm seeing an increase in the number of pensioner falangs tootling around on these three wheeler sidecar jobs, with the missus reclining comfortably in the sidecar.

some of them are rigged up with a shade over the driver and sidecar.

for local tootling in a rural or semi rural area they look ideal for the motorist on a budget.

I'm sure many of them do, but if you can confirm that the mileage is genuine by cross referencing with the service book and amount of owners it's had then obviously it's better than something with 10 owners and a shed load of miles. Much easier to do if you're buying it privately from the original owner of course. And I'm sure Thai 2nd hand car dealers are no more shady than western ones anyway. Wouldn't be possible!

Reminds me of a story when I went to see a Jamaican mechanic in Kilburn who we bought and sold cars with back in the 90's. He was busy changing the whole dash console to, in his own words "Give it an 'ickle haircut, mek it look younga!"

Chances are less that you'll find folks keeping service records/books, in reference to purchasing/selling used vehicles here, Shaggy...

My first car purchase was from an Irish expat who lived in Bangkok. It was an older Nissan diesel pick up with low milage and when I asked him if the odometer was correct, he stated he was only using it on weekends and no longer wanted to drive it due to all the traffic and crazy drivers. I half believed him and wound up paying him 250,000 baht for it back in 2005. I ultimately gave it to my BIL for being the foreman on our house build and doing several other projects. He still has it and it is running strong.

One never knows the true condition of any car and just like in our homelands, one must complete their due diligence before purchasing any high priced item.

Do they modify the pick ups for disabled.?

You can get burnt on any used car
I have gone back to a Lexus again in the UK
Not the best looking or the best to drive / economical
But if you buy an ok one they never let you down
I've also got a diesel mondeo with a tow bar that has been a fuckin nightmare only 62000 miles on the clock
My mate whose a taxi driver has done 260000miles with some small repairs here and there
Sometimes you can just buy a dog

go with the 2nd hand car. but make sure you check it out so that while on a tight budget, you dont bloat that with repairs.

Yeh ... we're happy.

I reckon though, the torque convertor is on the way out ... there's a noticeable 'shudder' while under load ... but it's fine for normal driving.

That beast is a dime a dozen here and replacing the TC with a decent 2nd hand one I reckon won't break the bank.

Twelve months later, the tyres are sweet, no hint of shockies needing replacement, ball joints, wheel alignments, R n P steering, while tardy, is fine and the tyres are at maybe 60 - 70%. The alloys have no scrapes and, apparently, it was a 1 owner from new.

The FiL has also bought a spare wheel and sprayed that god awefull, but usefull oil to the undercarriage and, in fine tradition, has put it, the oil, through the doors so that the bottoms don't rust out.

He didn't mention it (the oil coating), but you can see the slight stains on the front and rear running boards.

Changed the oil and filter ... hasn't asked for a santang ...

Sometimes you get lucky in Thailand.

considering how much those are, new, putting in a 100k to get it prim and proper is still a good deal.

though, the bumpy backroads takes a few lives off of that kitty
