Zebra crossings. A waste of good paint?

It's a nice thought, having these in Thailand, an effort to be a more considerate and safety-conscious society, but when they get parked on and generally ignored by moving traffic, what's the point?

I bet you don't stop at Pelican crossings either?

The one on Rama III works but only because the traffic is stopped anyway!.

These generally don't work here, either!

    Indeed.

Simple solution- raised pedestrian crossings. The next time somchai drives over one at full pelt after their installation, will be his last.

Raised crossings cost nothing and work. Full stop.

If you HAVE to slow down or smash your car to shit and likely injure yourself, you do.

if I were put my dapper hat on, i would suggest that the hospitals had them put down so they can rip off more travel insurance companies with their medical bills.

The reality is that they are fucking death traps, if someone does stop for you, someone behind them, who you cannot see, will simply overtake and shoot through at light speed. if you get in the way its your problem.

Only seen them work as intended once, and I think that had more to do with nit wanting to hit the 3" 4M water pipe I was carrying than the red lights. The fines for going through a red light on a crossing are quite high.... I've been a little surprised that the police have not turned them into a shake down opportunity.

Personally I do stop, partly because its the right thing to do, mainly to fuck off the chap behind me and watch the reaction of those planning to use the crossing.

That is exactly why I stopped stopping. The pedestrians look at you gone out and remain standing there. I think out of amazement that someone was so considerate, or the fear of some twat wizzing passed on the blind side with their motorcycle and taking them out.

They will stop if you have half a 4M blue pipe in front of you.... though I will admit its not a very practical solution.

At the airport they work well, you just have to push a trolley out in front as you cross.

I tried a little experiment this morning. I walked across my local zebra when a motorbike was coming. He slowed down and gave me a very strange "what the hell do you think you are doing?" type stare.

So not only won't the Thai slow down at the crossing, they'll likely plow into a crowd of pedestrians while staring at a feckin' zebra on the road!

He was on the pavement. Quite cute but a daft location, blocking most of it. A pram (do they exist here? I've never seen one) would need to go into the road to get past it.

More than a dozen years ago, living in Phrakanong, in a hurry to get to the BTS for work, I decided to man up and just walk straight across the zebra crossing, as you do, nobody slowed down, in fact they sped up, but I kept on walking, and the car which was about to kill me had to slam his breaks on. This had a good effect for me, but not so good for him because when he sped up trying to scare me off, the bus behind him sped up too, and didn't break in time to avoid smashing into the back of him. All the Thais around stared at me, not least the policeman who's duty it was every mrning to stand at the zebra crossing and do absolutely nothing... He ran after me and put his hand on my shoulder to stop me walking (I was passed the zebra crossing and on my way to the BTS steps by this point), so I roughly (and in a very mainly fashion) shoved his hand off and told him to fuck off (yes, loudly and in those exact words), then berated him in foul mouthed Londonesqueness (involving the word kunt numerous times) while pointing at the zebra crossing and shouting "stop, pedestrian crossing". After a minute or so, with him looked very confused, I turned around walked up the steps and went to work. End of story.

(I did take a different route home, and henceforth took a different route to work in the mornings, as I quite expected some policemen to be waiting for me one day).

There endth my zebra crossing story, and is perhaps the reason why Thais hate us foreigners...

As my wife says about zebra crossings, "at least you die legal"!
